Since I can’t get the forums on the Ares site to work for me, I’ll ask here!

Does an Ares game need to be connected to a mush/mux/etc? Could everything be done exclusively through the website/portal?

The Ares game is the mush/mux/etc.

You could probably get away with just not giving the MU details out and getting people using the portal instead.

That would require custom code, since the game has the address emblazoned on the home screen and it has the web client as well.

There’s really no reason to, though, since players can play together equally whether they’re connected via a MU Client or the portal. Sometimes games do web-only or client-only systems (like chargen) but in general it doesn’t matter how you connect.

If you want to DM me with the details of the problem you’re having, I can try to help you get that sorted out. You just need to create an AresCentral account and then you should be able to log in.

Why would you even want this?

As someone that can only connect via a webclient when at the office (and not the web portal’s clients, because I can’t get on the portals, and even when I can, they don’t refresh and the webclient doesn’t work) it would ban me from accessing the game, despite there being an alternative right there.

          In Occam I trust.

@Coin The game in question is currently being built on just a standard wiki and a Discord server.

I very much like the front page and various features of the web/portal part of Ares but MUX/MUSH/etc. coding confuses me to no end. 🤷

So as the potential game runner, that’s why I’d want that.

@catzilla There’s no MUSH/MUX coding; the whole thing is built on Ruby. The web portal and telnet connection are two different ways to look at the same thing.

Random observation: The telnet access is what makes Ares accessible to visually impaired players. Which of course doesn’t rule out having the coolest web portal ever.
