Seeing cool new characters that look like they might be fun to RP with but not wanting to instantly PM them and come off creepy/overexcited/stalkery/etc.

So even if @De-Villefort is right and all genres except for sci-fi and cyberpunk are filled with nothing but bad terrible people…

Sometimes it’s fun to play the villain. Do you think that any actor that gets the role of a villainous type absolutely hates their job while doing so? Do you think Alan Rickman or Christopher Lee cried in anguish every morning they woke up before going off to play their various famous villainous roles?

What if Ganymede wanted to end MSB ALL ALONG?! Her RL has gotten so busy that she couldn’t control MSB with so many members as it was but didn’t want to let go of her online authoritah so she hired someone that she knew would be divisive and would let to at least half of the members would be banned or leave on their own so she wouldn’t have to do so much work but still appear cool calm collected catbot (BECAUSE THAT PERSONALITY IS SO FUNNY!) and it worked out enough because she’s cold emotionless lawyer who doesn’t have time for FEELINGS and admitting to making a mistake is a fate far worse than DEATH!

so, curious, how could a game get you to run a plot that could have an effect on the setting, affect the metaplot or change the world in some sort of way? Is it just as simple as keeping that “You can do whatever you want here as long as it doesn’t break the world” on the tin or would you need something else?

In my mind, that is something I look to the STs toward. It is their world, I am just a player in it.

So, I guess it would be something like this… I run a bunch of scenes (whether or not my PC is involved, I do like them to be but depends on site rule) for Characters A, B, and C. More than half of these scenes are the Characters rescuing kittens from trees. Even if the STs/staff aren’t involved in these scenes, they would (hopefully) be at least aware of these scenes and the results of them (was kitten rescued or no?).

ST 1 is in control of the local Cat Spirit NPC. So maybe they reach out to Characters A and B because of their actions and rewards them somehow (with plot info, secrets, boons, etc. it can be whatever).

ST 2 is in control of the local Dog-shifter Villain NPC, who loves kitties in trouble. Dog NPC reaches out to Character C to corrupt them. Or whatever!

The STs have the fire department reward all Characters with some Status or something and unlock some clues to the fire department mystery.

I dunno.

@Yam At least for me, it’s less about incentives and more about what I’m allowed to do without a whole bunch of paperwork.

Some games are like “as long as you don’t blow up the city or use specific NPCs, run all the scenes”. Other games say “most things are fine, but just reach out if you’re concerned”. And then even others restrict further with, “anything beyond Bar RP requires a detailed submission with a questionnaire and approval from the entire staff team”.

I definitely enjoy running scenes in those first two types of games and will do so frequently for anyone interested. Like, let’s run into a spooky clown monster in the alley or accidentally come across a secret ghost cult in a basement. Admittedly, I will do these spur of the moment and make things up along the way. People usually seem to have fun.

The latter game, I will probably not run scenes on. I don’t want to have to wait a week or month or so to run a silly one shot that will (probably) not have an effect on the setting.

Maybe one day we’ll have a superhero game not run by abusers.

Honestly if they had just asked “hey can we use this is that cool” at the start, or said at any point “my bad, I think the AI scooped it and I didn’t know,” there wouldn’t be an issue. It’s the obfuscation and weird refusal to credit a coder with his code beyond the “idea” that frustrates me.

Totally agreed. Like, character wiki code ‘stealing’ is common and nobody bats an eye (rightfully so). So if this person was like, ‘oh I thought this was in the same guidelines, my bad’ or whatever, then no problem. Or even offering to put a ‘inspired by Trashcan’s code’ credit or something.

The double down denying is always so weird.

Since there are two games with the same name and one of them is displaying some dubious behavior so far…

Anyone remember the infamous Digichat game Shadows on the Bay? With the super incest magic family? And a bunch of other terrible things?

The gamerunner/head admin was all about WLW. Their supposed WLW partner helped them run the site. And there was a random dude that did the coding work.

Turns out the ‘random dude’ was actually the partner and the gamerunner had a jealous streak so bad they didn’t even want anyone touching their partner as their actual male self…

It was weird.

I am reminded of a similar crash out back on… NOLA 2?

A player posted a NSFW log (it was this player and their IRL partner) on the wiki without tagging it. The head staff/game runner asked said person to either remove it or at least tag it.

The player then proceeds to crash out, tearing down everything about them and their partner’s characters from the wiki. Apparently also threw a tantrum at staff about the whole situation before leaving. Their partner seemed genuinely apologetic (and embarrassed) about it all, said sorrys for their partner and them, then quietly left as well.
