Mostly I do an initial greet on channel this way others can welcome new person too. If anyone has been feeling neglected by me recently, I apologize as I have a lot of RL right now that needs my attention.

I will always check in with folks to make sure they have what they need to get started, answer any questions they might have, etc. What I cannot do anymore is hand hold a player through every nitty gritty moment. I’m burned out in that arena, too. While I’ve enjoyed joining orgs that are full, I’ve always chosen a character I thought I would like to play regardless of whether or not their house/org was active. Until very recently my alt’s HoH was mega idle for almost a year, logging in then out every few weeks to avoid idle roster. It was quiet in the org but didn’t make playing my character any less fun. That is always my advice to new players to a roster character; make sure you have fun with your character.

            Generally, I agree with this.

Unless you’re also some of us weirdos.

I try to greet new players in my org(s) when I see them. New players excite me because that means new opportunities, or following up on opportunities that might have needed to wait until a particular character was around. I’m also very inclusive in plots and other things I work on and I want to hook them into things right away so they’ll have things to do and stick with the character

My problem is that I get so enthusiastic, that I think I manage to chase half of them away. Or, I overwhelm them with information. So, I’ve cut back on both enthusiasm and information. All of this is in hopes that maybe they’ll want to do something later, but that connection almost never happens. I’m with others; it can become an exhausting cycle that goes on repeat.

Is this where I admit I rarely have any idea who is on or off roster unless people say hey on channel?

When someone shows you who they are, over and over again? Believe them.

@Narson Sub to the roster bboard! Now that their email system is working again, you’ll see everyone go on and off the roster.

Shoutouts to @Meg for greeting me when I took a roster. I wouldn’t have lasted as long as I did without the help!

100%. I’ve never even tried. If I have a plot in mind or something currently ongoing, I generally try to point them in that direction but I view my job as welcome & supply.

                      as previously stated, good day.

I’ve waffled a lot on how to approach this structurally because there’s a pretty wide degree of variation in how much someone wants to be greeted. I’ve definitely seen people overwhelmed with enthusiastic friendliness and bust out a window to escape, never to be seen again, and conversely (and way more commonly) people that feel isolated and never quite figure out how to get involved.

The experience for new players is never far from my mind and something that I’m very unhappy with, so long term it will change dramatically but short term (well shorter), it’ll probably be automated alerts to everyone tied to a character when it comes off the roster to prompt interaction.

If I were greeted in orgs like @Nynrose does I’d probably cry. Happiness tears.

Totalled up the number of rosters I’ve applied for – well, not pertinent to the current conversation. Answer is a lot. But. Have experienced all hues of the how to greet a roster rainbow. Not sure what the happy middle is between extreme enthusiasm and isolation.
