Thanks for the explanation about what happened! It’s kind of surprising that it vanished almost overnight, but I guess that’s the way things happen with an insular group. And you’re right that they were very friendly, and just not particularly keen on having new players dropping by.
I don’t think it was overnight. I definitely noticed severe low-activity times when I was there; it’s why I left, really. Then it supposedly picked back up, people were playing, but that didn’t last too long. It happens. People lose interest. Some people lose interest a LOT sooner than others, though. I think a lot of the core group also just got back into Arx, too, and got sucked into their RP there, which also happens.

I don’t think this is exactly true.
There was a core group who were good friends beforehand and played together at their own pace, and everyone else could (and did, for a lot of us) make their own fun. I ran a bunch of plots and events, and it was fine for a long time. They never barred anyone from RP, but it did become difficult to get into their social circle, and even the people who were invited often were not able to RP at the pace they liked (scenes often took weeks to finish).
At no point did I feel I wasn’t allowed to run a plot, or allowed to participate in a plot, or anything; but it was very difficult to get (and maintain) the attention of a certain sub-set of people.
So, while not ideal, I will say that characterizing them as “shutting people out” is an exaggeration, IMO, as someone who was not brought into their group in any real way and did feel like I was missing out.

Maybe it’s the Ares thing but IA has a vibe a lot more like what I remember comic places having when I was a kid, it’s pretty laid back, it’s super easy to get shit going, and the two most active members of staff, Mars and Uranus, are both awesome.
It also has the easiest app I’ve ever seen on a comic game.

Despite it’s popularity, I got no RP after a few attempts on RP Requests and DMing characters who were directly involved with my character. After I missed an event due to a scheduling issue on my part, I gave up. Oh well.
Apparently it closed down about two weeks ago? I have no clue what happened to it.
I played there a while ago and really liked it. But I found that the activity restrictions to keep your character didn’t really match up with how much rp was available, and that was a little stressful. Tried to go back after I got a handle on the semester but it seemed dead.
ETA: I also found them to not be rp inclusive, even if they were friendly to chat with.

I’d just like to clarify that I don’t think there’s anything wrong with having an insular play group. Some people want to only play with their close friends, and that’s fine. I’d just appreciate people saying that instead of being friendly in DMs and stringing me along. But even that is a minor gripe at best.
I can also understand people not knowing how to convey what they want, or overcommitting, or whatever reason there is for the drop in communication. Not a problem. I left and played somewhere else, and all was well.

I agree ^^ and tbh it wasn’t my first go-to critique. With maybe one or two more staff members to spread stuff around and a little more time to rp before losing a character, it might not have been an issue I even noticed

Okay, I was actually on the previous game the group that ran the Krakoa game did and my experience there was like 1:1 with what most people are saying about that one. It was super insular and honestly I kind of got the impression it was a public game mostly because they were so mad people on CoH had called them a clique.
I never got that invested because my app process took like a week and involved someone playing Emma Frost telling me the game didn’t allow any powers that could impact someone’s emotions. Later, I got a screen-long @mail screed (that was retracted and re-sent more than a dozen times during the night) because I said it was weird to drop a character so you could put a reserve on one the moment someone took it after it’d been open a week. And I finally just left after a staffer running a scene ignored literally every pose that I made during it.
I did a total of two scenes there with people I didn’t know before apping. Every time I tried to get something going, the best response I ever saw was, “Wow, that’s a great idea!” followed by absolute dead silence if I suggested or asked about actually doing it.

I don’t know which game they ran beforehand, tbh; I definitely didn’t play on it. But yeah, there were some ruddy flags, but all in all it was a neutral-to-positive experience until it wasn’t and I bailed.

Also, I didn’t know you meant Common Descent. In that case, I did play there, briefly, as Lor-Zod (one scene) and Clint (maybe… like… three scenes).

@Prototart Long-time listener, first time poster. If Macha ran Marvel 80’s I know who this is peripherally. My experience from 80’s was she was somewhat toxic and negative as a staffer. I’ve heard the name thrown about in the exceedingly negative a few times but can’t find any information about who this player really is/was. I know who this player was on an alt and didn’t have a great experience, finding her rather unpleasant to deal with and rather bullying. I had that same kind of experience on the 80’s then.
So… can someone fill me in on who Macha is? What did she do?

Macha is a really pushy and entitled MUer whose claim to fame is basically that everything ion her RL sucks. This is fair, a lot of our lives suck a lot. She is, however, extremely vocal about it on MSB and was one of the people at the forefront of the, uh, “schism”, for lack of a better word that isn’t “batshit drama”.
it’s hard to talk about her as a player without mentioning that because she blurs that line so much herself, but as a player she’s very entitled, often demanding things go her way or “retcon”, and she’s really) possessive of whomever she’s latched on to sextually (that word actually exists, holy fuckballs that’s amazing, I love language).
Anyway, a really pushy, toxic person who uses their RL misfortune to elicit pity both privately and publicly.

To add to what Coin said, she’s a crybully and she intentionally engineers situations to look like a victim so that she can a- crybully more, and b- scream about victim blaming when anybody so much as hints that she had a part in what happened.
She also doesn’t just complain about all the terrible things in her life, she actively weaponizes her problems to get her way. Some people whine too much. Some people are totally Eeyore. She’s not one of those people. She’s a ‘how dare you tell me not to page you, my hamster has a toothache, you personally are ruining my already terrible life’ (I don’t think this one actually happened) sort of person.

@IoleRae @Coin Yikes, that’s good to know. My limited experience with her was she seemed toxic - a very negative person. I’ve heard some things in OOC about her life but my impression was there was an inability to take a look at yourself and say I might be part of the problem. I never interacted with her ICly I don’t think. Putting together who she is now I’m pretty glad for that.
Thank you everyone for letting us lurkers in the hobby know. I’m certainly not in the mainstream of things.

I wanted to offer something of substance instead of the glib comment that was originally here. Like every other game, Infinite Adventures has its pros and cons:
PRO: The playerbase is friendly and engaging on the whole, and a healthy number of them seem interested in running plots, creating RP for others without overtly cliquish behavior, and so forth.
PRO: Uranus in particular is, staff-wise, very invested in handling player relations issues and generating RP. For the cape circuit specifically, he does these things on a level noticeably beyond the norm for games these days.
PRO: The game is quite active thus far, with RP requests often being answered quickly and players in my admittedly limited experience being plenty open to being directly approached for play.
PRO: It is not required that players write apps from scratch: the staff will handle write ups upon request, allowing appers to make adjustments afterwards to taste. Given that the app process has been in a state of flux for most of the game’s life thus far, this is a definite boon for anyone who isn’t too particular about how their apps are written up.
CON: There doesn’t seem to be much in the way of organization or consistency behind the scenes. It’s not ENTIRELY unusual on these games to be asked to adjust things on already approved sheets days or weeks after the fact in the early phases of a game, as app requirements are finalized; it is however unusual for an approved, active character to be abruptly and without conversation be taken from their player and set as an NPC despite the player having numerous plot irons in the fire, and despite the admin in charge of their sphere claiming a lack of interest in said removal. It seems as if communication could use some shoring up, so as to keep everyone - staff AND players - on the same page.
CON: Because the game is new and has experienced a rapid growth over its brief lifespan thus far, it seems as if the head administrator in particular is in over his head, performing jobs that he isn’t especially suited to or comfortable with rather than delegating to the half a dozen or so other members of staff. Generally, I would suggest being very circumspect in dealing with him.
Overall, given that the pickings are pretty slim for active games that are not run primarily for the benefit of mediocre adult children and their toxic friends - as Heroes Assembled, the other major choice that doesn’t come with a ton of additional qualifiers - it would be difficult NOT to recommend Infinite Adventures. Despite a rocky experience in places, it’s overall got a lot of potential for people interested in mixed theme comic book roleplay with a ~Year 2 bent, and I recommend giving it a look and seeing what the playerbase has to offer; just bear in mind that the management still seems to be working some things out.
