@Pavel Ahh, but ideas come easier when you know who wants to be involved. ‘Who wants to have a scene at X’ might make people who don’t want to go to X just never say anything.

I don’t put the onus on others – I just wait and see who I’m working with before figuring out what to do.

@Pax Same. I’ve been in a nice juicy ‘I must really suck for some reason, no one wants to play with me’ spiral for a couple of years now going on that logic.

I get stuck in this kinda feeling regularly too. I try to remember that a lot of people probably do, and just try to ask but it’s hard – sometimes I personally get really nervous about paging people, get stuck with thoughts of ‘well if they wanted to talk to me/rp with me they’d reach out and do it so I shouldn’t bother them’ etc etc.

I’ve been trying to remind myself lately that I generally like it when people do randomly page me to chat, ask for rp, etc, so most people probably like it when I reach out to them too. I hope. And even if they say no, they can’t right now, whatever, it doesn’t actually matter that much. And maybe they feel better for being reached out to.

idk, this was meant to be me just typing ‘same’ but then I didn’t stop.

And yeah, wanting to keep sheets secret from people you are at war with for whatever reason is like. Appropriate.

Meh. Do it anyway, show people everything. Any IC conflict I’ve had with other PCs has always been way better when there’s OOC comradery and communication backing it up. I have no interest in OOC antagonism with the actual player.

I don’t have an issue with people buying a lot of things at once, though I can agree with not really wanting people to do it in the middle of a scene.

I hang out in OOC rooms a lot because I just like chatting to people. It helps me feel some sense of community on the game, and I enjoy that? But yeah, sometimes they get weird.

I’d like a CoD game to stick around. They seem to be pretty rare these days, especially in the traditional default urban setting.

    • RE: On PvP and permanent injuries

I like the idea of rebranding to CvC but it’ll never take – though I have seen PvP that really is about just beating the other player. OOC lies to convince a player to join a scene in a specific way ‘I’ll help you evade the authorities!’ only the then ICly set them up to get got.

I’ve had the ‘Hey I’d like to scene with you’ chat with someone I didn’t ICly get along with, get warned ‘Depending on how this goes, this could turn to violence’ and then when I agreed, extra people suddenly show up to help the other player out. Violence was a 100% guarantee, not a maybe, and it ended with my character dead and over out of seemingly nowhere.

That said, I really do enjoy going against other players sometimes, but like most forms of RP, it’s always been at its best when it really is a collaborative effort like other forms of RP. Discussions with the other parties, talking about what could or shouldn’t be attempted – sometimes you do want to surprise people so you might not mention everything, but sometimes with some chatter people will happily engage.

I don’t mind serious or permanent injury being done to my characters in the course of it either. Back in the days of Haunted Memories I had a mortal+ character built as a sort of ‘Hunter’ archetype, and one of my good friends needed to go away for a bit and volunteered to have his vamp be torpored by her to explain his absence. It drove so much RP as people looked for him and looked for her, and she ended up getting got but I had so much fun.

But I generally wouldn’t engage in serious PvP shenanigans with pure strangers anymore either. Some OOC communication beforehand needs to be done.

@Tez Does the per week limit mean that if you started later you can just literally never ‘catch up’ though? Or if you have a week where you were unable to reach the limit, suddenly you’re forever behind whatever amount?

Does it even matter? Probably not, but people do care about these kinds of things I think.

    • RE: Asking for RP

I definitely feel like I ask for RP more than I get asked, but I think I’ve decided that’s not so big a deal, for me, anymore. I’m not sure. I’ve written before about struggles paging people, and I know that feeling of asking on public channels and getting no replies, but I’m trying to just work on things and get more comfortable with the paging and what not.

I’ve definitely done the whole ‘we should rp!’ thing in the past as a way of asking ‘lets play right now’ though.

There was a time once where a similar topic came up about the difficulties of finding RP back on MSB I think, and some of the reponses were along the lines of:

‘vague rp requests don’t interest me, people need to come up with something to do, so if I see ‘who wants to play’ I won’t respond but if someone says ‘i’ll be at <location> doing <thing> if anyone wants to come along!’ then I might’

I always felt this was a bit odd personally because I’d rather see who’s around for RP and then figure out what to do – if I’m the one asking for RP I’m generally always willing to figure out the what, the where, and even do the set, but I like to know who is gonna be involved before figuring out the details.

Sometimes I wonder instead of a limit on earning you put a limit on spending per <suitable time period.>

I like the ‘downtime points’ idea, which limited how much off-camera stuff you could do, so you couldn’t spend sixty hours a week spying on Abelard, and forty hours a week at work and ten growing sacred herbs and fifty-four building a space ship.

If stuff that takes a lot of study or isn’t practiced in the course of other stuff the PC is doing cost downtime points it might work out well. But as somebody who keeps forgetting to spend their XP, it sounds too complicated.

Yeah, it is starting to sound too complicated and too much like paperwork. I tend to prefer systems that just let players spend xp, I feel like most people know what works for their character and what doesn’t. Some like to race for big numbers but you know, it can work fine too.

I really dislike it when they get too much like paperwork, I have a lot of issues with the CofD Aspiration system on this front.

    • RE: Asking for RP

I really am feeling like the majority of the issue ties to ‘I want to RP but can’t think of the details so I won’t ask’ which I hadn’t really considered before.

I’ve tried pretty hard over the past week to just do the thing and ask people to play, which I know isn’t always that easy for people, but it’s worked out pretty well for me I think.

@catzilla Ahahaha. It’s not the staff side of it, +job paperwork comes with the territory.

It’s the coming up with aspirations for my characters that often really stumps me and just feels like busy work for the sake of a beat. Especially when their intention is just ‘little one scene things like ‘eat a hamburger’’ that people suggest and you go okay I did that and it’s done and now I need to come up with ANOTHER one and – ack.

@RedJellyBean I think you’re thinking of Jeurg (Juerg? I can’t remember the spelling) from Haunted Memories who I think got a reputation for that kinda weirdness. No idea if it’s the same player though.

Mastigos and Mind Magic seems to be one of the common IC creeper covers. They’re meant to be confrontational and do awful things to make you think! Which can be a fine concept if handled properly oocly but I feel like a lot of weird folk have hidden behind it over the years.

@Tez In the last year or so when I realize ‘Oh I want to have a scene with character X about thing Y’ I have definitely started putting in a lil asp ‘talk to character X about thing Y’ and that does help it a lot, yes.

@Arkandel said in How long should characters last?:

It’s probably not a solvable problem in the long term unless a MU* is very, very serious about remaining consistent about the toys it rewards over time.

To slightly tangent on this, I’d worry that if players and staff were serious about trying to keep things consistant, it could end up leaving poor systems in place when potentially better things could be tried. Just because it wouldn’t be fair to the people who had to deal with those systems?

You might remember when my character on Haunted Memories was PK’d, it did trigger a lot of changes to pvp policies behind the scenes, justification for outright PK was changed, and I think XP rollover got updated as well. I didn’t benefit from any of the improvements, which kinda sucked in the moment, but it was overall an improvement.
