@Roz How many lords and ladies games are actually active besides Arx? Not that you’re wrong, but y’know.

people could be talking about past game experiences!!!

I had quite a bit of fun (and dramaz) around political marriage play on Fading Suns games. And one other original theme place that I can’t remember the name of. Also on WoD once too, around generational oaths. So the opportunites have been out there, but the same sort of worries/problems seem to crop up!

@mietze I think I would enjoy the hell out of a (GENERIC MUSH) political marriage that started off ambivalent or even antagonistic and slowly morphed over time into respect and friendship or even romance or didn’t morph at all.

I am pretty sure I am a fail for people who want the long term romance stuff. For these reasons:

                • Most people I seem to run into want polyamorous relationships, I don’t really enjoy them. I tend to feel forgotten.
                • I get bored with constantly being ‘lovey dovey’ after so many times.
                • I can be a little AWOL for periods because I have no creative energy.
                • I do prefer more political marriages over ‘forever in love’.
                • I just stop trying to interact with people who try to play the jealousy game with me or the ‘cheating game’. I don’t enjoy them and I’ll just ignore attempts to make them happen.
                • I ask only once or twice, if a good friend more, for someone to RP with me. I use to ask frequently but I started feeling like I was the only one doing the effort.
                • Finally, I am not certain I get ‘emotionally invested’ enough for a lot of people.

Thankfully, I got couple friends who don’t care about any of those with me. They are willing to play monogamous with me, even though the majority of them are polyamorous inclined.

As for those who prefer political matches, I’m always game for that.

ATM, I only have ORchid on Arx and the in progress OC is going to be with one of my friends who doesn’t mind being monogamous with me.

Thundergultch: Arabella is the Madame of the whorehouse so she could, probably, be in some sort of exclusive relationship now since she is the Boss now, not a minion. Kathryn is a political figure who is more of a villain than I planned but I’m game for a political marriage on her. She’s basically considered ‘grandma’ by the settings standards. I have been stuck on my 3rd alt so open to possibilities.

Atharia: NPCs and PCS alike, I’m happy to plot political matches for the ones that can do marrying stuff. The only one of the PCs and NPCs that would not be able too is my Courtesan and my married Queen and King. As a staff, I’m perfectly fine with PCs getting into relations with my NPCs. Just bear in mind that said NPC will not always be available for RP.

@icanbeyourmuse ‘Enough emotionally invested’ is a massive red flag for me. I’m doing an RP thing with somebody. I’m not entering an actual, real relationship with them.

@L-B-Heuschkel Its not to much for me. A lot of people I know seem to get very invested in their character and it doesn’t surprise me that it extends to their IC relationships. I don’t get as attached or invested in my characters so romantic relationships also aren’t invested for me. I’m not completely detached but a good portion of the time I am not gonna be bothered to lose a character. I might briefly get angry if I wasn’t ‘ready’ for their story to be done but that is over quickly with nostalgic discussions about said character and not finishing their stories.

@icanbeyourmuse I think the most important part there is probably to communicate well enough to have matching expectations, yeah.

But then, I’m cautious as hell because my life is too short for this kind of drama. I’ll never forget the girl who quit her job and booked tickets from Detroit to Denmark because she thought that her IC relationship with my partner was an OOC one.

Apologies for interrupting the current thread but recent conversation has INSPIRED ME to ask about this.

For those of you who like OOC rooms/lounges…WHY? I hate them a lot so it’s just very hard for me to understand. The socialization aspect, tossing around story and RP ideas, etc., seems like it’d be so much better to happen on public channels, so that people can be involved even if they’re out on the grid RPing? It just seems like, if you have a culture where game stuff has a gridded OOC space where this sort of discussion happens, that – it’d kind of discourage leaving the room to RP? Because what if you missed out on getting involved in stuff?

Idk. Please convince me. (I mean, don’t actually. I just want to understand.)

“This IC relationship is a stand-in for RL companionship” is pervasive in the hobby.

@Roz On games that have OOC lounges I never used them, preferring to be on the grid.

On Ares games, I tend to be in whatever temp room I left my char in. But Ares is different from the older codebases in that regard – you can be in a dozen scenes at the same time and meeting others by wandering the grid is rarely a thing. Also because Ares games tend to be fairly small population-wise.

@L-B-Heuschkel Totally! First thing I bring up with people wo want ‘romance’ with me is that I am not into polyamorous, despite my choice to play hookers and such. I always feel expectations for any long term relationships that are romantically inclined (be it political, love relationships, friends with benefits, etc) should have what each person wants from it set out from the start. Friendships, parental, sibling, child, co-workers, etc don’t necessarily need such discussions but I definitely think anything that will be intimate should be laid out from the start so no one is surprised when it is not exactly what they want.

@Roz For me it is more of a gateway to CG or staff rooms. I also find it a good place for people to be ‘ooc’ should they not be in the mood to RP or anything. Though, for me, it is not a deal breaker not to have OOC rooms. More of a convenience? To be fair, it could be a hold over from the old days since they were, once upon a time, very common.

I have thought about this in the past and have had two suppositions:

                                  • Convention: It was just a thing in many early games, especially ones that for whatever reason did not have channels.
                                  • I’m This Character: I’ve noticed that some people choose to present as their character for both IC and OOC purposes. I sort of do this myself, though it’s less that I feel like I want people to associate with me OOCly through the avatar of my character and more that I have a near zero tolerance for breaching my identity firewall.

@icanbeyourmuse Same, re: the poly thing. I’m not judging – people should play however they like. I suspect that a lot of people play poly characters at least in part because that way, they feel less stranded if a partner leaves, and less glued to only one person.

For me, though, it’s just not a story I’m really interested in telling.

I LOVE poly ships but you definitely have to do work to make it work because characters emotionally invest differently in different people, and there’s excellent story meat there, but it means I get to ship with more than one of my friends at a time so–

let it be a challenge to you
