City of Glass - Discussion

@OnceWas As has already been explained to you, the help files explain what commands do. Not the policy on their use. Going onto a Pennmush game and typing help @dig does the same thing, whether you can @dig or not.
Intentional or not, complaining here while this is being explained on the game is a touch on the rude side.
-
@OnceWas said in City of Glass - Discussion:
The intention wasn’t to be rude; it’s to try to make it, if possible, something funny. It’s easier to make it a joke than an insult if I plan to stay, which I do
Which part was the joke? Because it seems like it did not land.
ETA: joking when you’re making a complaint actually has a higher quotient of coming off as an asshole, because it can make a comment sound passive aggressive instead of lighthearted
-
@Pavel The phrase used was “lack of clarity”.
It’s not a case of “you didn’t use form J-11, the orange one” it’s a question of “we use telepathic turtles, not paperwork”. That’s not a lack of clarity. Then someone else adds on that I’m apparently illiterate, saying that the help file I’m looking at is most definitely not saying what they’re seeing - I provide a link to them, suddenly I’m being rude.
Of course, them not citing their source, that’s… uh. Well, let’s focus on six people telling me I’m wrong, so I can be wrong six times in a row, okay?
I said the documentation wasn’t clear. It’s not clear. The documentation I said didn’t contain any mention of admin being required did not make mention of admin being required. Those aren’t opinions. They’re details.

That was me. And I did ‘cite my source’.
"
<Questions> Percival (@Tinuviel) says, “It’s literally the first line.”
<Questions> Percival (@Tinuviel) says, “help build: Permission Required: These commands require the Admin role or the build permission.”"
Emphasis mine and not from the original.
The fact that the file you mentioned is in the “~admin~” section might have given you a clue, too.

CTL-F results of “admin”: 2.
Any mentions made of “required admin powers or roles”? No.Hm.
Sorry, how did I arrive at this link? Let’s examine. -
Typing “help build”
Leads to this:
https://cityofglass.aresmush.com/help/building
First Line:
“Permission Required: These commands require the Admin role or the build permission.”
-
@Pavel
Weird.
So, following my link, uh… any “different” outcome, maybe? -
@OnceWas Not really. You’re still being rude trying to be ‘funny’ here while staff is trying to explain that help files describe commands not policy.
-
@Pavel
Noted. -
@OnceWas said in City of Glass - Discussion:

You could have just pointed it out in a constructive manner, y’know: “Oh, btw, the building tutorial doesn’t mention the required roles.”
And you’d be correct - it should. I will fix it. But really, 1 star for bad help files because one help article out of hundreds has a mild omission seems a bit… much?
-
@Faraday
…yes, because all MU* are rated by Michelin star ratings.
I said “minus one” from its rating, which is five, thus far. It’s a great place. Bad documentation, eh, maybe not such a thrilling attraction. -

I misunderstood. My mistake.
Nonetheless - a sweeping statement of “bad documentation” and players not being worth “five minutes of extra time” over one single documentation omission is bafflingly aggressive.
-
I’d just like to note that before the exchange with Pavel about admin or not etc., the building staffer in question apologized to you for the lack of clarity and noted that adjustments to the documentation about this are on the to-do list to make it clear that the build staffer will be doing builds on request.
So like-- even build staff agreed that this was an issue that they plan to resolve but meanwhile you decided to show your butt about it anyways.
People don’t need to be telling you you’re wrong to be telling you your approach is not great.
-
@sao After a dialogue with said staffer, whom I found to be a very helpful and thorough assistant throughout the process, I am certain the oversight will be addressed. The continued hate I’m getting is also speaking a lot about how much, or little, people want any amount of friction generated, which is somewhat coloring my concerns, as well.
-
@OnceWas the “continued hate” you’re getting is a direct reaction to how publicly extra you were about this particular issue. Welcome to the consequences of your own actions. I don’t want to play anywhere it’s cool to act like you did.

Hey as someone who doesn’t rp and so I’m not invested in this situation, sometimes you should probably take a step back and think for a second. If you were reading a joke like that about something you put a lot of hard work into, would you appreciate it? Or would it come across dismissive?
You have the benefit of knowing your tone and intention. No one can read tone on the internet.
Step back, my dude. Evaluate yourself. Realize if everyone is reading your first post as passive aggressive or just aggressive aggressive, maybe you came out swinging too hard.
You can always drop the bat, be like, hey sorry, and just walk away from the plate. You don’t need to keep swinging with statements like ‘maybe my post wasn’t the problem, maybe you’re all the problem and I should be the one concerned!’

Well. Good news…
-
@OnceWas I can understand frustration when you feel like people aren’t helping you when you need help. However, as someone who was not around for whatever went down— joking when trying to make a criticism only works when you’re friends with someone already.
@Pavel could have easily said what you did to me and I would have rolled my eyes and fixed it. Maybe laughed if I had decided he was being charming that day rather than the annoying butt he normally is
Thenomain or EmmahSue or @Coin could easily tell me my entire life is trash for missing documentation and I wouldn’t take it personally.
But someone I’m not really familiar with making that kind of joke at me would get under my skin and make me feel insulted.

The key difference, I think, is that I’d have told you privately. Charm notwithstanding.

I have never… ever… drawn as complete a blank as I have for a played by for my character here compared to anywhere I’ve ever played before.
Like, ugh.
