I think it is better to make SA against the rules, but not spy on private scenes.

If people really are keeping it private nobody will know. If they are not keeping it private causing staff, other players and characters to have to deal than it makes it easier to ban since the topic is against the rules.

@voiceinthevoid Why can’t we have non-creeper vampire players who non consensually force people into diner RP? “My Tremere with the Eat Food merit dominates you into coming into Flo’s Diner and having a slice of pecan pie and casual conversation with me.”

Still the case on a lot of games. The term for not doing this is “speedwalking” and is considered a faux pas.

          That’s a little different.

“Speedwalking” was a faux pas because of situations like:

Abelard waits outside the cafe for Bridget to come out so he can throw a frog at her. She comes out and moves on before he has time to trigger his frog-throwing pose.

          and

Camille and Bridget are trapped in a burning bus in the middle of the street. There is screaming. Abelard walks directly through them without posing or waiting for a pose.

There are better solutions to this.

The “Immersive RP” thing, they would pause for a set time in each room even if nobody was there. The reason was that it was “immersive” to interact with the MUSH in a way that showed that it takes two minutes to walk a city block. It had nothing to do with other players, they’d actually ‘speedwalk’ slowly past other players with a pose about how they didn’t care that the other PCs were there.

You’re joking but I was actually looking into a kind of “shared interests” RP matchmaking system. You list what you’re interested in like social/bar RP, romance, conflict RP, factional/political RP, maybe even spicier stuff like themes of bigotry and SA etc.

Then if Jack & Jill both select social/politics but have no other interests in common, the matchmaker lists them as having 2 interests in common, which they can pull up a list of. However if Jack is into romance but Jill isn’t, and Jill is into SA but Jack isn’t, then the matchmaker won’t list these themes for either of them. E.g. Jill won’t even know Jack wants romance, and Jack won’t know Jill wants SA.

I like this because it destigmatises things a bit, like as long as someone isn’t forcing X onto you then there’s no reason to judge them for liking something you don’t. And additionally because I kind of think that the big scare topics, like SA, aren’t the only kinds of RP that shouldn’t be forced, or which can lead to awkward incompatibilities. Some people hate bar RP, some people hate big scenes, some people hate conflict, some people hate politics. And when you put SA on the same list as social or conflict RP, it’s less like a kink list and more just general preferneces.

I recall at one point I was playing a noir-themed vampire, and someone who thought I was cool and wanted to be my friend kept asking me to come to their girls nights and get milkshakes etc. They meant no harm but honestly it just made me feel like they were downselling my concept. So in that example I’d have selected no bar/social RP, yes to faction/politics/conflict RP.

Totally tangential to this topic, but I’ve met people who hate anything that requires them to leave a single specific grid square.

I have been thinking on this for a little while and have come to the conclusion that I would not ban SA RP outright. I would prohibit it from happening in public, and enforce a “this is non-canon, fantasy, ‘it was all a dream’ RP only” policy for those who engage in it privately.

                Why?

So those who are coerced into participating don’t feel afraid to report abuse. Literally the only reason.

                  @Pavel

Yeah I agree. That is a great idea. You are right that people could be coerced into not reporting or even kind of blackmailed like now that you did x if you don’t role play y I’m telling staff you did x.

While that sounds cray people who like to cross boundaries often find a shady way.

The creepy WOD vampire player kind of went down this path according to the gossip anyway. He allegedly would go “your character did xyz wrong. They can be punished with x or with pk. Now that you did x which is against the rules if you go to staff we both go down.”

It is tricky because there are creepers on these games whose kink for being the aggressor in SA extends to enjoying pushing boundaries ooc. Definitely not everyone but they exist.

On the other hand people who are ic victims of SA roleplay and recruit protectors and ic comfort after in a loud hard to avoid way are imo often the ooc aggressor where their unprepared unwarned audience for this is imo the ones being mistreated.

In some SA the player playing the victim suggested and initiated the role play which is imo not only fine but ideal. When the aggressor is ooc pushing for the role play it can be a red flag.

Things can be further yikes when one player has some ooc power in the situation like Ic authority, being staff or friends of staff.

The creepy vampire player sought out ic positions of authority and was at times buddies with staffers.

@Pavel Among the most hilarious of my gamerunning experiences was the conversation that went kinda like this:

“You guys need to adjust your RP to reflect the fact that your characters are the ones role-playing rape. Abelard is letting Byron climb in his window wearing a mask, and if you keep talking about it IC as real rapes, Abelard’s PC sister, who’s finding this traumatic, is probably gonna go to the watch and get Byron hanged and I don’t think that’s where you were aiming to go with this silliness.”

This solved it but I dunno that PC sister ever really got over the squick. She did keep playing, though.

Late to the conversation, but thought I would weigh in. My thoughts are that topics like this only work in a truly collaborative writing environment, meaning that all players are responsible for working together and writing for all parties involved in the scene. When it is Player A writing only for Character 1 who is abusing Character 2 written solely by Player B, the player-character connection is tightly bound and bleed can happen. Also, I feel it’s harder for the scene to get steered in a direction one of the players doesn’t want to go in when that player can yank the steering wheel of the offending character at any point.
