Secondly, golly I picked the
worstbest time to start reading a book full of existential dread about intergalactic sociology and which also solves the Fermi paradox.OO what book.
Also the fact that I’m just running down the thread upvoting everyone tells you something about how I feel about space.

Space is just so darn beautiful.
And mindnumbingly vast when you think about it.

Quoted for truth, and to answer the question, will give the short review later, but also spoilers because a lot of it comes in book 2 of a trilogy.

@Jennkryst I picked up that book a few days ago, actually. I haven’t started it yet, but been looking forward to reading it!

Loved it. It’s very much in the high concept line of SF, but man, there’s some fascinating stuff in there. Also, I had done reading on the Cultural Revolution a few years ago, so it was interesting getting something that grew directly out of the consequences of that in sensibility.

The James Webb was sitting at my husband’s work for a while before launch (like, a couple of years); we’re really attached to the whole thing. They did a lot of cool tours and stuff, and my son was able to go see it several times while it was here.
Every time a system came online, it was like a little mini-holiday at my house. When the first calibration image came back, it was like Christmas morning.
The magnitude of engineering and elbow-grease that has gone into getting us these images is tear-jerking.

One of the things I love about our last series of scopes is that we’ve been all: Ok we think it’ll be this good, which is awesome and then the telescope is all…
Hold my drink.
