RE: Banningsposted in Rough and Rowdy
I woke up this morning a wee bit sad as I had to close a tab open to MSB on my phone, and reminded myself:
The forum was never the community. It was just where the community agreed to hang out. It could have been Reddit or Discord or a MUSH but - for a few years - it was the MSB forum.
If WORA was ever a thing, it is here now. The spirit of open, lively debate is here.
What we left behind are admin who admit candidly that they wanted us off their forum, so we are gone.
The people left behind on Derpâs forum are a separate community.
People can decide where they would like to belong. (Except for those of us who were banned but I also think that just reinforces what most of us had already chosen.)
I am happy to be part of this community. đ„°

RE: Banningsposted in Rough and Rowdy
At some point, it has to become a vibes-based decision.
Honestly? At every point. Even looking down the barrel of logs and screenshots, youâre still gonna have to make a decision based on your instincts.
Iâm not sure people grasp how much even the most flippant of us wind up agonizing over these decisions sometimes. âI donât want to make a big deal out of thisâ is probably the most common phrase people say to me when they want to put someone on my radar, and thatâs sort of a sad state of affairs. Even on GH, which was a hot mess, we only ever got a handful of actual complaints about behavior from people; most people who are getting harassed just leave rather than go through the whole process of reporting someone.
The only false report Iâve ever gotten on any game, to my knowledge, was from Ruiz. Who went right for the throat with a job to complain about the person it turned out she was harassing. Neither player got banned over it, though the other player eventually quit.
^ See above re: wrong way on a decision before. I shouldâve banned Ruiz right then (or at least shortly afterward when her creepiness started to twig @bear_necessities), but no one had receipts and it felt somehow wrong to ban someone just because my co-admin thought they were creepy.
Which is just the dumbest rationale Iâve ever used, and it embarrasses me to this day.

tl;dr - be a good admin and swing the ban-hammer freely till you achieve the desired PEACE & QUIET

RE: Banningsposted in Rough and Rowdy
I forgot this thread was here.
I stand by my âlet Derpâs forum lieâ mentality, but alsoâŠDerp has been completely honest about why certain bans were lifted and others werenât: He doesnât like us.
Which is completely fair. I donât like him, either.
When he was made admin, I had every intention of just bouncing. But I realize now that I fucking care about this community, and he doesnât, so Iâm glad I came back.I donât expect to ever be unbanned there. Derp canât handle people speaking truth to him, especially women.
The community that was WORA - that Arkandel handed over to Ganymede - isnât fractured. Itâs right fucking here.
WORA has never been an immutable line in the sand. Itâs always a party thatâs popped up at someoneâs house 'cause their parents were out of town.
When Nymeria threatened copyright infringement and we had to flee off Proboards (or whatever that was), the community moved to a new location. This is the same thing: Ganymede torched our old neighborhood and gave the keys to Derp, so we just moved on.

RE: Banningsposted in Rough and Rowdy
Itâs really hard to explain how much of this is because⊠honestly⊠Derp is such a mansplainy little turd, that it is hard to swallow that he âwins.â He and Ganymede essentially have the keys to our shared history. And it hurts to think of losing that (for the 4th time?) because of this narrow-minded little man who doesnât have the common decency to yield to the will of the community he was supposed to be entrusted to oversee.
Derp should have done the right thing and stepped aside when it became obvious how upset so many of us were.
Ganymede should have done the right thing and asked him to step aside when it became obvious how upset so many of us were.
The misplaced trust in Ganymede over the years compiled by the smug crowing imagined in the background by that tiresome manchildâŠ
It still stings.
So thatâs why Iâm still reading, even though I know I shouldnât. Iâll grow out of it soon.
They wonât.

I understand the âmust have proofâ mindset, though. Sometimes (rarely, but still) bitches do lie. After all, this board was founded after people were falsely accused of something and punished without any sort of transparent investigation.
Yep.
Sometimes people lie.
Please show me the receipts where people have lied about being harassed. If this is such a prevalent problem, you should have no trouble producing them.

RE: Why is Pack closing?posted in Rough and Rowdy
@Cobalt lordy, just when it feels like it canât go any lower

Just from my own past experience? Donât give away your DB. Donât let someone take it over. We did that with GH, and I regret that decision big-time. Stuff only got worse, and - even though I publicly walked away - thereâs still a sense of responsibility. And people who still think I was responsible for shit that I had no control over.
If they love it so much, let them make an homage.

RE: Macha Awareness (And Unappreciation) threadposted in Rough and Rowdy
@Cobalt just jumping on the bandwagon.
Derpâs knee-jerk assumption was that YOU are the bad actor in this scenario, and everyone agreed - right up until you walked into the room, when suddenly they realized they werenât just talking about someone who couldnât defend themselves. Then Ghost and Macha did their frantic back-pedaling, and Derp of course ignored the fire he just started.
Theyâre not there for discussion. They have BANNED everyone who actually wants to discuss things.

@bear_necessities Iâm unfortunately not familiar with Tekâs history and only know inkling through AresMUSH games that weâve played on before.
I will just note that I did not know at the time that I was playing with the person going by Inkling that there was even a rumor that they were Tek, so my opinion formed completely independently of this.
I did not have a good experience playing with this person. They didnât communicate well OOC, seemed to bleed IC/OOC, and ultimately left me with a sense that they were dishonest.
YMMV.

@Jumpscare The game-owner was Tek with a new handle on. The game went under a few weeks after they were outed for lying to everyone.

RE: Missed Settingsposted in Rough and Rowdy
@MisterBoring I donât actually know anything about Monster Hunters, but - based on the name - thatâs probably a fair assumption.
Most of the material is focused on the mechanics of forstalls, weapons, monster abilities, hunting grounds, etc. And the whole thing came out of episodic YT content that was basically a guy describing a Monster of the Week.
Thereâs more to the world when you get into the goals of different factions, but the TTRPG is very much designed around groups going out and hunting monsters.
If a person was trying to set up a western sandbox, I wouldnât recommend this IP at all. But if a person was interested in having focused or episodic adventures, this is a great place to start.

This doesnât excite me the same way. I love Dark City. I love cowboys. I donât love them combined. But itâs a âdifferent strokes for different folksâ situation.

A Dark City game would be dope, though.

I wonder if the Wild Imaginary West set says anything about the -isms.
No, it doesnât really address that at all, but instead rewrites history from 1876 forward, giving you the United States and the Uncivilized West. The implication is that things are kind of as they would be/have always been, but even the map is a little different.

The over-arching conflict is between the East (steam) vs West (electricity), peppered by Faction conflict, like the US Railroad has a lot of economic power, the Tulos Mob runs crime, etc.
The Frontier Conservation Society has a brief mention of working with Native Americans:
The Frontier Conservation Society aims to preserve nature, both its fauna and flora. While many at this time donât believe extinction of a species is possible, Charles Darwin helped some to see that the natural competition of things can lead to the complete loss of anything. The Frontier Conservation Society was born from a group of biologists studying the West. During their travels, they especially learned from the Native Americans how to rely on the land and coexist with its creatures.
And thereâs one NPC mentioned thatâs half-Native American, and itâs commented that âmost of the European immigrants saw him as a Native, and most of the Natives saw him as a European immigrant.â
But thereâs nothing specifically addressing social issues at the time.
My take is that the Uncivilized West is a place for everyone, from all walks of life, as long as you have the mettle to survive; they have real monsters to worry about, so they donât have time to worry about skin-color or religious views, but that these notions still exist, especially in the East.

RE: Missed Settingsposted in Rough and Rowdy
@Gashlycrumb Yep. We started watching circa lockdown, and I kept thinking⊠this would make a great RPG setting. So we backed the kickstarter.
The guide is mostly mechanics that seems fun for a TTRPG, but also has some good setting information about various factions, and tons of monster info.
I would play in this world, sort of tongue-in-cheek but with real peril out there! I just donât have it in me to set up another game right now.
Itâs someone elseâs turn.
