RE: Bannings
I woke up this morning a wee bit sad as I had to close a tab open to MSB on my phone, and reminded myself:
The forum was never the community. It was just where the community agreed to hang out. It could have been Reddit or Discord or a MUSH but - for a few years - it was the MSB forum.
If WORA was ever a thing, it is here now. The spirit of open, lively debate is here.
What we left behind are admin who admit candidly that they wanted us off their forum, so we are gone.
The people left behind on Derpās forum are a separate community.
People can decide where they would like to belong. (Except for those of us who were banned but I also think that just reinforces what most of us had already chosen.)
I am happy to be part of this community. š„°

RE: Bannings
At some point, it has to become a vibes-based decision.
Honestly? At every point. Even looking down the barrel of logs and screenshots, youāre still gonna have to make a decision based on your instincts.
Iām not sure people grasp how much even the most flippant of us wind up agonizing over these decisions sometimes. āI donāt want to make a big deal out of thisā is probably the most common phrase people say to me when they want to put someone on my radar, and thatās sort of a sad state of affairs. Even on GH, which was a hot mess, we only ever got a handful of actual complaints about behavior from people; most people who are getting harassed just leave rather than go through the whole process of reporting someone.
The only false report Iāve ever gotten on any game, to my knowledge, was from Ruiz. Who went right for the throat with a job to complain about the person it turned out she was harassing. Neither player got banned over it, though the other player eventually quit.
^ See above re: wrong way on a decision before. I shouldāve banned Ruiz right then (or at least shortly afterward when her creepiness started to twig @bear_necessities), but no one had receipts and it felt somehow wrong to ban someone just because my co-admin thought they were creepy.
Which is just the dumbest rationale Iāve ever used, and it embarrasses me to this day.
tl;dr - be a good admin and swing the ban-hammer freely till you achieve the desired PEACE & QUIET

RE: Bannings
I forgot this thread was here.
I stand by my ālet Derpās forum lieā mentality, but alsoā¦
Derp has been completely honest about why certain bans were lifted and others werenāt: He doesnāt like us.
Which is completely fair. I donāt like him, either.
When he was made admin, I had every intention of just bouncing. But I realize now that I fucking care about this community, and he doesnāt, so Iām glad I came back.I donāt expect to ever be unbanned there. Derp canāt handle people speaking truth to him, especially women.
The community that was WORA - that Arkandel handed over to Ganymede - isnāt fractured. Itās right fucking here.
WORA has never been an immutable line in the sand. Itās always a party thatās popped up at someoneās house 'cause their parents were out of town.
When Nymeria threatened copyright infringement and we had to flee off Proboards (or whatever that was), the community moved to a new location. This is the same thing: Ganymede torched our old neighborhood and gave the keys to Derp, so we just moved on.

RE: Bannings
Itās really hard to explain how much of this is because⦠honestly⦠Derp is such a mansplainy little turd, that it is hard to swallow that he āwins.ā He and Ganymede essentially have the keys to our shared history. And it hurts to think of losing that (for the 4th time?) because of this narrow-minded little man who doesnāt have the common decency to yield to the will of the community he was supposed to be entrusted to oversee.
Derp should have done the right thing and stepped aside when it became obvious how upset so many of us were.
Ganymede should have done the right thing and asked him to step aside when it became obvious how upset so many of us were.
The misplaced trust in Ganymede over the years compiled by the smug crowing imagined in the background by that tiresome manchildā¦
It still stings.
So thatās why Iām still reading, even though I know I shouldnāt. Iāll grow out of it soon.
They wonāt.

I understand the āmust have proofā mindset, though. Sometimes (rarely, but still) bitches do lie. After all, this board was founded after people were falsely accused of something and punished without any sort of transparent investigation.
Yep.
Sometimes people lie.
Please show me the receipts where people have lied about being harassed. If this is such a prevalent problem, you should have no trouble producing them.

We lost our CKCS recently. So now we have 1 & 1/4 Boston Terriers.

RE: Why is Pack closing?
@Cobalt lordy, just when it feels like it canāt go any lower
Just from my own past experience? Donāt give away your DB. Donāt let someone take it over. We did that with GH, and I regret that decision big-time. Stuff only got worse, and - even though I publicly walked away - thereās still a sense of responsibility. And people who still think I was responsible for shit that I had no control over.
If they love it so much, let them make an homage.

RE: Enjoy the Reads!! (Admin: ETA a content warning. It's THE LOG from The Pack thread.)
LOLOL and Gany banned us all to protect this nasty weirdo

RE: Macha Awareness (And Unappreciation) thread
@Cobalt just jumping on the bandwagon.
Derpās knee-jerk assumption was that YOU are the bad actor in this scenario, and everyone agreed - right up until you walked into the room, when suddenly they realized they werenāt just talking about someone who couldnāt defend themselves. Then Ghost and Macha did their frantic back-pedaling, and Derp of course ignored the fire he just started.
Theyāre not there for discussion. They have BANNED everyone who actually wants to discuss things.

@Jumpscare The game-owner was Tek with a new handle on. The game went under a few weeks after they were outed for lying to everyone.

RE: Missed Settings
@MisterBoring I donāt actually know anything about Monster Hunters, but - based on the name - thatās probably a fair assumption.
Most of the material is focused on the mechanics of forstalls, weapons, monster abilities, hunting grounds, etc. And the whole thing came out of episodic YT content that was basically a guy describing a Monster of the Week.
Thereās more to the world when you get into the goals of different factions, but the TTRPG is very much designed around groups going out and hunting monsters.
If a person was trying to set up a western sandbox, I wouldnāt recommend this IP at all. But if a person was interested in having focused or episodic adventures, this is a great place to start.

This doesnāt excite me the same way. I love Dark City. I love cowboys. I donāt love them combined. But itās a ādifferent strokes for different folksā situation.
A Dark City game would be dope, though.

I wonder if the Wild Imaginary West set says anything about the -isms.
No, it doesnāt really address that at all, but instead rewrites history from 1876 forward, giving you the United States and the Uncivilized West. The implication is that things are kind of as they would be/have always been, but even the map is a little different.
The over-arching conflict is between the East (steam) vs West (electricity), peppered by Faction conflict, like the US Railroad has a lot of economic power, the Tulos Mob runs crime, etc.
The Frontier Conservation Society has a brief mention of working with Native Americans:
The Frontier Conservation Society aims to preserve nature, both its fauna and flora. While many at this time donāt believe extinction of a species is possible, Charles Darwin helped some to see that the natural competition of things can lead to the complete loss of anything. The Frontier Conservation Society was born from a group of biologists studying the West. During their travels, they especially learned from the Native Americans how to rely on the land and coexist with its creatures.
And thereās one NPC mentioned thatās half-Native American, and itās commented that āmost of the European immigrants saw him as a Native, and most of the Natives saw him as a European immigrant.ā
But thereās nothing specifically addressing social issues at the time.
My take is that the Uncivilized West is a place for everyone, from all walks of life, as long as you have the mettle to survive; they have real monsters to worry about, so they donāt have time to worry about skin-color or religious views, but that these notions still exist, especially in the East.

@KarmaBum If you like FS3, I do happen to have the stats I put together from The Networkās Western series that yāall could use as a starting point.
Appreciated, but I donāt have the spoons to make fun for other people right now.
@Gashlycrumb might want this, though.

RE: Missed Settings
@Gashlycrumb Yep. We started watching circa lockdown, and I kept thinking⦠this would make a great RPG setting. So we backed the kickstarter.
The guide is mostly mechanics that seems fun for a TTRPG, but also has some good setting information about various factions, and tons of monster info.
I would play in this world, sort of tongue-in-cheek but with real peril out there! I just donāt have it in me to set up another game right now.
Itās someone elseās turn.

RE: AI In Poses
There are people that I played with for years who are so boring, so uncreative, so repetitive and lacking spark that - by the metrics above - they are definitely being controlled by an LLM. There are times that my own writing is so flat that I would be less embarrassed if ChatGPT had written it.
While I donāt particularly want to RP with a robot, I donāt have space in my brain to start worrying about whether or not someone Iām writing with is now or has ever been an AI.
^ part of that reply was written by ChatGPT
ā¦or was it?!
