I don’t feel able to tell the boat story in a way that does it justice and MSB’s search function is an atrocity if you can’t log in (if it migrated there at all, it was immortalized a couple boards back).

Bane was a weirdo who liked to aggressively tell people they were wrong and he was right (honestly, he’s very hard to explain if you aren’t experiencing him post and post for months, the stack of aggravation of high). Bane made a game. People had I think some OK experiences there? But it didn’t take off right away and he got very ‘Am I Out of Touch, no, it’s the Children Who are Wrong’ about it. He wrote a very long blog post about how the game was a boat, and the boat had sunk, but it wasn’t the fault of the boat maker, it was the fault of…idk, the world, and really he was still right about everything.

Some enterprising person (Brus or Peverel I think?) took this blog post and rewrote it changing ‘boat’ to ‘butt’, among some other wonderful wordplay, and it was a fine, fine time.

This is why archives of these stupid boards are important lol.

@Third-Eye I believe he was talking about the development of…Crimson Skies I think? It was was pulp fiction steampunk kind of game. And he just had some of the weirdest game policies I had ever encountered. I can’t remember exactly, but something about how plots and scenes were set up were just wild, even if I do think my brain has tried to erase the fact that I even played there out of sheer morbid curiosity.

And then yes, he proceeded to blame everyone else for game failing because he was the One True Mush Developer who understood who game making really worked and all other forms are inadequate.

And it was also partly because Bane decided that TinyMUX/MUSH/Rhost were all ass and he was going to make his OWN type of game and call it … I honestly can’t remember what he was going to call it. But it was just TinyMUX repackaged with … I wanna say . instead of + for commands?

So after the boat post. Brus wrote up a parody about how Bane was going to build a BETTER boat and call it a BUTT.

ETA: Fuck my ADHD longterm memory why is this garbage in my head but I can’t remember where I set my stupid phone down.

I’ve been sitting on this for a few days because I’ve been trying to figure out how to address this peeve or even if I wanted to address it at all. But in light of what I will now call ‘MachaGate’ on The Pack thread, and the fact that this was said:

While I agree with the sentiment, in part, if this person is Tek, they’ve done their best to distance themselves from that moniker. (Here, MSB, and through Ares). So if they are Tek, they’re not likely to answer truthfully when called out publicly.

So if you really need to know you can ask them privately, or you can just block/ignore/whatever the function is called.

@Pavel See usually I’d agree with you but in this case I’m going to point towards their own policy which states in big bold letters:

Ares Handles
I am not requiring players link their Ares handles. Everyone gets a fair shot here. However, being intentionally misleading about your identity to interact with someone who you know doesn’t want to interact with you falls under fuckery and that is a bannable offense.

So if they want to be intentionally misleading about their identity, that’s fine but I don’t want to interact with her and she’s on more than just BMD.

@bear_necessities Huh. Normally, I’m pretty good at picking up on patterns of behavior (typing, speech, etc) to figure out who people are… but I didn’t see that one coming.

They were one of the names I glanced over at The Other Place on the way to better prey, so I’ll definitely need the story time too.
