I first started RPing in a forum/journal RP environment before making a switch to MU and MMO environments, and making the switch really helped me to work on things that had been a problem during my more async days - I had a bad habit of letting RP trail off into an endless loop of pleasantries and fluff, without addressing the thing that the scene had been started for. I also had a bad habit of overcommitting myself to a number of ongoing scenes and then basically dropping all of them when I got overwhelmed trying to respond to a bunch of posts every evening. Now I probably could go back to more async with a heightened consciousness of those things that made it harder for me, but I find it puts more pressure on me to do so, so I lean in on the format that helps curb those bad habits naturally.

I appreciate this advice since these days I am frequently MU*ing to avoid working on this very thing. All the while frequently expecting the same level of detail & quality from myself when I am, for instance, pretending to be a vampire from Albuquerque.

I think my vampire knows yours, feel free to hit me up. If you say “I wanna use you as brain sorbet for the next hour and a half and then I really have to get back to work,” I’ll probably even set a timer and unimpressively close out the scene to shoo you off the game at the right time.

Watching a known jerk continue to do jerk things in the MU* community and feeling unsure about whether it’d be the right call to just let people know that’s a known jerk. Idk, do people deserve second chances if they wanna be anonymous? … atm I’ve settled on the feeling that maybe it doesn’t really matter whether people know who they are or not, since the culprit seems eager to dig their own grave on a brand new identity anyway.

@Kestrel If the same end is accomplished without you having to get involved, then that’s probably the way to go. It spares you some unnecessary danger.

@Kestrel The only times I’ve had issues with someone, I quickly learned the other person was a known entity that others tend to avoid anyway. I think assholes have a habit of showing their true colors all on their own, and unless you’re concerned about them doing something harmful, it’s not worth worrying about.

I agree with the others, though if you know of anyone who was directly harmed by that person it may be a good idea to quietly mention the player’s identity to them specifically so they know not to get involved.

Yeah, you will take a risk by talking about this person’s history. But they might be gaslighting someone at this very moment and that person might be saved a lot of pain they get the nudge away from that “Am I unhinged and judgmental, or is this person fucking with me?” feeling.

                  Tough call, I sez.

Peeve of the Day: When you don’t even want to be in a scene half that big and probably wouldn’t join if you had a choice, but you still feel bitter that your character can’t go. WTF, brain.

                      @Gashlycrumb

In my last spate of activity, I constantly kept making decisions where I’d weigh “What’s the logical scene/event my character would join or be interested in/have something to do” versus “where are all my friends at?”

I’d usually choose the former and it bit me in the ass every time.

I woke up feeling so good, I think I’d better call in sick/ I need a personal trainer to help me hold my drink
I plan to be spontaneous next time we meet/I’m putting off procrastinating until next week
I’ll get onto it when I give a shit

@SpaceKhomeini I usually choose the latter, but I’m always joining games as a singleton and then finding that the people I make friends with and want to play with most are in the wrong faction, so I become a terrible turncoat and get my ass bitten that way instead.

Horrified that in this day and current world climate, a game would implement “every character is infertile and the priests have control over granting fertility by giving you a magic fruit to eat” approach to what I presume is a problem that could be easily solved by “both parties need to OOCly consent to a pregnancy”.

Like, there is so much ICK behind the idea of that level of control over reproductive rights.

@mangosplitz I could see that as like… the reason for what happens ICly for a ‘only babies with OOC consent’ policy.

But if that is all that’s written down, there’s at least two flaws in their logic tree that I, a dumb tuba player, can think of.

don’t be dumb, roz, priests are incorruptible forces of all that is good and moral.

how long does the fruit last to give you fertility? do you have to like, take it and then somehow time your ovulation as well? or do you not ovulate as a woman in this? are you just perma-fertile after eating the fruit?

honestly, i don’t see the big deal about ovulation. but honestly i have so many more questions than the policy answered.
