@imstillhere At one point early on I think staff said they didn’t want to turn on automatic aging until systems were less in Beta.
But my memory of that conversation was that it was – years ago. So idk.
I was just going to say, “Because it’s Arx.”
-
@BloodAngel It’s not really odd, the game has been in beta this whole time and auto-aging has never been a code priority. Apos has always said that the age is a field that could be false anyway since real_age is a separate field that can be set so it doesn’t trouble him particularly that a bunch of people out there who “look” or “seem” 22.

@imstillhere said in An Arx Peeve Thread:
@sao This is probably a stupid question, how come it isn’t automatic?
I can somewhat answer that. I was trying to get Arxcode to work for Atharia and was asking Tehom why ages were auto-updated (as I prefer that) and he said it is pretty complex to code into and other things. I forget it all and am lazy to try to find it in my discord stuff. I mean, codewise you’re looking to check for age updating twice a day.

@sao said in An Arx Peeve Thread:
@helvetica God I wish aging were automatic.
If not automatic, then at least have birth year written down somewhere so age can be manually changed if needed.
-
@helvetica I age up pretty much every roster I take.
-
I was aging up but it started getting weird to outpace people who are technically 5+ years older than me
-
I age up every damn birthday, and am now the oldest man on the grid because I pass everyone. Lol.
-
I’ve been doubling up and aging two years at a time whenever I remember to just to make up for the difference. Sometimes, I’ll be asked a timeline question and have to reconcile with the fact that Lark is way too young for something to have happened 10 years ago or whatever.

I have that issue with Aleksei, especially with the fact that his son is also aging every IC year.

shit how old is Elaine…
page Kael=How old is your eldest spawn IC?
eldest spawn age -1 = Elaine age
I’d be sunk otherwise.

I have a note in my Evernotes that’s just “important Arx dates” and one of them is Fitz’s birthday, so I just have the IC year there I can compare to the current time.
-
RE: auto aging, it was not something simple to code, and didn’t want people aging out of what were important roster chars before the game’s story really took off, and also when magic was in the thought was that there would be ways for people to not physically age anyway so having it configurable would still be the play.
Seven years of beta later…
-
I do some convoluted shit where I look at the unofficial wiki to go back in time to what Victus’ age was at game start, then compare that to the Tyde Rebellion and the current time. It’s probably wrong, but he’s in his 40’s so he’s practically ancient.
Also is Maelstrom still the size and climate of Ireland? 'Cause I think I was told that like 5 years ago but I also might be making it up as headcanon.
-
@Dreampipe “…the Mourning Isles mostly scandinavian type climates in the north to more something like Guernsey or the Isle of Jersey or other Brittany style isles in the south.” - lore Climates And Weather Of Arvum
-
Maybe we all just forgot how to age.
Maybe the whirlpool was the fountain of youth and you people ruined it.

Ever since I saw the @bb that said ‘people may have a different real age than the one on the site’ I have assumed I am one of these eternally youthful sorts, PROBLEM SOLVED.

The time ratio.
Don’t get me wrong, like 90% of the time I prefer it, but it was harvest time the last time I was playing regularly and that makes me feel bad.
I’m the crazy person who still misses 3:1 time.
So you want Preston to kidnap Fitz into the Faith sooner?

Preston wants Aleksei, not Fitz. God. Already too many elves in Preston’s life.

I am trying to find out if any of the languages I know are supposed to be SUPER SEKRIT/will get me killed for advertising that I know them, and also my inner baby Tolkien nerd needs like… a list of all the languages, and while I’m not saying they need to hire a linguist to invent all these new languages… I must know more!

@sao and @Roz, maybe @Narson (I don’t know how much he knows about languages) in my experience are very knowledgeable about all things Arx and could probably help you know if they are secret or not. I haven’t seen any of them, especially Narson who I’ve known for years, se what they know OOC on an IC level.
