Against the rules of the game to “make” people interact with you, and going over their heads would have been just that.
I’m sorry you had a bad time! I love playing a priest but it can be challenging to get plot traction. But just for everyone’s future knowledge, you can definitely just go around someone if you aren’t getting responses. The person “above” them isn’t going to page the people not responding them and tell them they have to RP with you. You’re just taking a different avenue via different people. If there’s something you absolutely need an org head for you can also request.
-
I honestly don’t see a way it could have been anything else, but that was probably both situational and my own lack of being used to things working this way. I do appreciate the suggestion.
-
@Narson Nobody takes King’s Own characters, either. I’ve spent years trying to figure it out and the best I’ve come up with is that it, like Godsworn, means you can’t do other things. Primarily marriage, but I think there’s also an idea that if you are King’s Own that’s all you are and all you can do. I imagine this applies to Faith/Solace, too, in addition to the lore knowledge issues.
It’s a niche, which is great and fun if you’re into exploring a thing deeply, but not appealing if you want to do many things broadly. Anyway, I decided it’s fine. I can do a KO action with everyone on it and have personal relationships with everyone, etc.
-
@farfalla I think the existence of discipleship has really hurt the Faith being able to recruit godsworn. Generally speaking, being a disciple AND being able to stay noble AND be married AND have kids is just more appealing on an OOC level than just being a godsworn. I mean, I absolutely picked a godsworn because I saw ‘can’t get married or have children’ and went FUCK YEAH, but my id is the opposite of many other people’s.

See, I feel the opposite way in regards to Whispers no longer being allowed to be Noble. I think it hurt the org.
-
@Pyrephox As a priest (miss you Tomwell! xoxox) I had a lot of challenges with discipleship. Because so many people do play it as “priest but without vows or restrictions.” I had disciples tell me that I couldn’t run a Faith event because it was “their” god. I’d honestly love to see a lot of discipleships reworked to avoid some of this, though for the ones that are larger @orgs I’m not sure how to approach it. But yeah, guys, if you’re a disciple it means you’re sweeping the shrine or picking up all the sticks near Petrichor’s altar, not that you’re priest-lite.
-
@helvetica I think anywhere someone has to ‘give up’ something to be something else, it’s going to hurt that something else if there are options that allow someone to reap most of the benefits while NOT giving anything up. I don’t know that the Whispers (or most Godsworn) have enough personal power/Cool Stuff that makes up for someone being required to leave a noble house, which has probably formed much of their play circle/IC influence up until that part.
I’m not sure of the answer to that, mind you. I love people having to make choices and not being able to do it all; but the choices and benefits thereof might need a little tweaking for the orgs that require great commitment like the Faith, the King’s Own, and the Whispers.
-
@Pyrephox I remember there was talk of the social systems carrying heavier weight for the Faith and Whispers, specifically. But that soon was co-opted and swept away by equally socially adept noble characters, anyway.
ETA: But really, I don’t care about crunchy mechanics so much as story.
-
@Pyrephox I don’t want to see some of those things watered down, though. Like, aside from not knowing how a King’s Own would work without giving up other vows, I wouldn’t personally be happy with it. The whole thing that makes it interesting is the total devotion and sacrifice. Honestly I’m fine with it being small if that’s not something a lot of people are into, I’d much rather that than Lord Blorbo being a weekend warrior in the King’s Own or whatever.

I don’t, either! My ideal would be that if an org is exclusive and cuts you off from some parts of the game experience, that you get some unique and irreplaceable benefits from it that makes it a worthwhile sacrifice. It’s just a matter of figuring out what that is and sticking to it.
-
@Pyrephox Oh, yeah, totally agree. I’d love to see something cool beyond a prop mod that people in those orgs are the only ones with access to.

So I played a Cabrera for a little bit and can cover a little bit for why I rostered him. Might be helpful! Some of it is super basic stuff on my part but, you know, I get nervous bothering people so quietly suffer instead.
So a few things, firstly I don’t think he actually had a bedroom. I actually don’t know how characters get bedrooms either. I guess an +request or luckily bump into someone?
I don’t think I caught another scene with a Templar which, you know, again I can reach out but it’s like being the new kid in school. I didn’t have the confidence to go up to the group and say ‘hey there!’
I hate my martial RP. I feel my swordfighting RP could do with work. I end up holding myself to a high expectation.
I think it was one of my first scenes someone came in and paged me they “made Cabrera for the roster” which probably was intended to be super friendly (and trust me, now I’d probably be more chill with it) but at the time it felt like a bunch of weight. Like he had an expectation on how to be played.
I took him out on the grid a few times as he doesn’t have any existing connections while he was RSable but folk didn’t come by to RP.
–
TL;DR - I got nervous with him, couldn’t find a purpose. Rostered.
-
-
@Whisky I wrote him so that was probably me. I was just excited he had a player. Sorry it came off like pressure, definitely not my intention.
You get a room by asking for one! Typically someone in your org should be making sure that someone new off the roster has a room / salary / gear. New characters often don’t have their own room because no one has played them before to do this.
-
@Whisky No, that’s really useful. I did plan to set up a corridor or something off the Chapter House for Godsworn Templars to have rooms - Preston mostly sleeps in the barracks, but yeah, I should be more proactive than reactive with that!
We’ve struggled a bit with regular Templar-only goings on due to the roster/unroster cycle, so perhaps I can start to hold martial events. Training evenings. Rites to Gloria. Things Templars can get involved in but which have a wider audience too. Ida’s Weeknight Trebuchet Party.
-
My attendance hinges on whether we learn about trebuchets or fire Ida from a trebuchet. (My character idol-worships her, but I just think it would be hilarious.)
-
@Solstice she popped on to say she’d be active again soon, so maybe your special dream will come true!

I think this is a real issue (across the board, not just with the Faith). I’m grizzled enough that I’ll be like “Yo, where’s my room and my money” but I can see people not knowing how to get room/salary/gear without being approached. Or being too nervous to ask.
Not intending to place any blame on people for NOT reaching out to new players because I’ve been there too and the roster-rinse-repeat is exhausting. In short…I have no useful ideas.

It probably was, I know now it probably wasn’t as I’d be in the same boat I imagine if someone picked up a roster. If I ever wrote one. Just at the time it sort of felt like a weight.
Yeah as he didn’t have one and I didn’t really feel confident to reach out, I just sort of felt he slipped through the cracks so quietly rostered him and moved on.

Yeah, something like that would have been interesting! Something I could do with him rather than either +lrp in the training centre or stand in a bar. I don’t think we RPed together for the few months I played him and we live in the same timezone as far as I’m aware.

If i had my druthers, all choices made would lock you out of other choices, starting right from CG. Not necessarily advocating any specific ones being discussed, just - in general.
