I do like the idea of mods / admins having some way of absolutely identifying they are acting in that role. Be it separate accounts, or even just a specific formatting option locked to admins.
Perhaps admin voice can go in a code block?
-
@KarmaBum I feel this, and I get this, but I can also see another side? Not everyone who posts here is going to have the same level of comfort with each mod. I think having clear ways to differentiate (and yes, be able to block as posters) between mod input and poster input would be a net positive for inclusion.
-
@KarmaBum I quite agree. I err on the side of the text distinction. Conversations are gonna get heated, especially in the Rough and Rowdy section. That’s to be expected. And we need a quick and easy way to differentiate between a mod mucking in with the crew and them laying down the law.
At least in my view.
yes, be able to block as posters
As far as I’m aware, if you want us to still have the label next to our regular names along-side having a mod account, we’d still be set admin/mod and would still be unblockable. I don’t know of any work around for this.

Potential workaround: making a group just for labeling that has none of the permissions and put the actual powers elsewhere, namely in another account.
Honestly, if you have a mod that people feel the need to block, there’s a problem SOMEWHERE that should probably be addressed first.
On that subject, we ARE working on something along those lines: ways to appeal decisions, etc. etc., so that if there is a problem you will have ways (MULTIPLE ONES) to say so.
-
I’m just upvoting every argument even the ones that contradict each other at this point. So many good points. Good luck making a decision!

Right, which is why it’s a good thing that the mods we have are reasonable, sane humans.
It feels like a separate account is just a way to mask problematic behavior. If @tsar can’t treat me with respect on her normal account, changing over to her mod account doesn’t make her a different person.
But I also don’t have much more opinion on this.
If you guys as admin think you want second accounts? Go for it. If one of you turns out to be such a prick that I’d want to block your regular account? I will bounce, regardless of your second account status.
If second accounts make the mods happy, knock yourselves out. Just please keep it transparent somehow.

I’m just upvoting every post because I appreciate the feedback.
We can try one thing, and if it doesn’t work, try another. But hearing what people like (OR HATE) is a good place to start, even knowing we can’t make everyone happy.

@Tez Personally I’d go for option 2, but instead just have it be this:
Blah blah this is me, Tez, talking normally. As me, Tez.
ADMIN: This is me, Tez, talking as an admin. Stop that, you marsupial gits.
Mod voice feels too much like mom voice and a more…talking down? That talking to? Not sure why.
I’ve actually been persuaded in the virtue of having a single log in admin account. Though, with the caveats Rathykins noted, around identifying who is doing the acting when acting with them.
(Or even comboing it to factor in Pavel’s concerns. So admin can issue warnings via ADMIN: or Mod Voice: or whatever from their main account and then have actions on the single log in, maybe. Though that loses the blocking benefit).
It is possible to think someone can be an OK admin and just not want to listen to them.
-
-
Honestly, if it gets to the point where you’d rather block an admin/mod than just (with your brains, rather than code) ignore them, that’s a bigger problem.
-
@Pavel Sometimes someone just bothers you though, you know? I have a couple people I blocked not because they’re bad people but because they just irritate me and it’s better for my blood pressure to not see it.
-
@farfalla I’ll look into it. No promises, and not a lot of high hopes, but I will AT LEAST put the effort of two googles into it.
-
-
Honestly, I think it’s a bit weird that admin accounts can block people. How can you admin if you can’t see half the shit you’re supposed to be dealing with?
-
Now that I’ve taken a step back I realize I was probably being reactionary when I agreed to a separate mod account and it’s not necessary. I don’t even think there’ll be a necessity for a lot of “moderation”, at least I hope not. You guys can probably just get away with a highlight, but if conversations are getting so out of control that a mod needs to step in? I assume the thread can just get locked, and a separate post can be added with the explanation.
-
@farfalla Two googles later, I’m not seeing anything obvious, but I put up a post on the official NodeBB forum asking about it.

Eh, depends. I can see plenty of situations where a mod can wade in and be like “okay, calm it down” before things get to the state of needing a lock. I wonder how many hog pit shitfights would’ve cooled to a simmer if someone outside of the situation would come in and say “back to your corners and calm down for a bit.”
-
@Tez Thank you bb but it’s not that big a deal, haha. I was just saying there can be reasons to want to block that don’t make someone un-admin-worthy. I think I fall on the side of just putting ADMIN: before anything. Easy.
-
My suggestion for separate accounts is because historically, the community (at large) has had HUGE difficulties telling between. The ‘is that a mod voice?’ was definitely the biggest “thing” that was difficult about modding MSB. It’s the most absolute, obvious way I can think of to remove the point of confusion.
If folks can be better about other people being able to tell than historic attempts, I think it would be fine. I WILL say the suggestion is not because of the recent dust-ups over there, but instead something I have been advocating for for a long time, just to remove the stupid confusion and take it off the table.
