@IoleRae Innnnnnteresting. I don’t have a memory of that, just how they would get snotty.
I definitely remember her freaking the fuck out about her desc being posted. That was when the community jumped off Proboards (or Vboards or whatever we were using) and onto self-hosted stuff. IIRC, she wound up harassing the upstream provider of that host until it was easier to just take the desc down.

They definitely threatened at least one potential game with legal action; I don’t think they actually followed through with it, but a letter was sent and everything. I would say who the screen name is of the person who got it, but I, uh, only remember their real name any more. -.- Somebody I know got it though!! They didn’t sue, but sent a ‘you must stop this’ letter.
Wasn’t it that they tried to pursue legal action against Peverel (and maybe Rasheem?), for them refusing to take down the post of Nymeria’s desc in the ‘tasteless descs’ forum on WORA/SWOFA? Which is why the forum kept moving hosts?
I can go bother Hate-o-tron and see if he remembers.
-
I definitely remember some incarnation of WORA being hosted in Malaysia because of Nymeria.
We were soldiers once, and young.
-
Woof, the old days.
No lie though, that desc was terrible.
-
@Cobalt Yuuuuuup. We jumped off the freehosting stuff onto someone’s host in some random country, and she still pestered those people. I cannot recall if Peverel was hosting it at the time or just trying to help out 'cause lawyer?
I very clearly remember her stupid “emeraldine silk” desc, though. All her tantrum did was burn that shit into my memory for life.
-
@KarmaBum I think it was Lolth that took over hosting at some point because she was basically like “I’m not in the US, good luck suing me!”
-
Fuck, we’re like… really old, guys.
-
Y’all are making me crazy curious about this terrible desc.
-
@GF I wish I had it archived somewhere. The last version of it I saw was on WORA and was translated into Swedish Chef in order to avoid her stupid take-down bullshit.
I know there were “orbs” where her eyes should be, and there was definitely “emeraldine silk” in her gown. But it wasn’t even really all that bad. It would’ve disappeared from collective memory by now if she hadn’t had a temper tantrum.
-
@KarmaBum Ah, the Streisand Effect?
-
This is like listening to grandpa tell war stories.

Nobody’s mentioned BigBad yet.
Wtf is wrong?
-
@SpaceKhomeini The bell is ToL-ing.
ETA: I’ve spent far, far too long looking at archive.org, alas they don’t have the individual wiki pages for all the famed personae of that era.

Cause he wasn’t involved in the nymeria stuff.

I’m still waiting for the point where we can all gather around the fire and reminisce about Bane stories.

Tell me more a-boat it.

@junipersky
I don’t feel able to tell the boat story in a way that does it justice and MSB’s search function is an atrocity if you can’t log in (if it migrated there at all, it was immortalized a couple boards back).Bane was a weirdo who liked to aggressively tell people they were wrong and he was right (honestly, he’s very hard to explain if you aren’t experiencing him post and post for months, the stack of aggravation of high). Bane made a game. People had I think some OK experiences there? But it didn’t take off right away and he got very ‘Am I Out of Touch, no, it’s the Children Who are Wrong’ about it. He wrote a very long blog post about how the game was a boat, and the boat had sunk, but it wasn’t the fault of the boat maker, it was the fault of…idk, the world, and really he was still right about everything.
Some enterprising person (Brus or Peverel I think?) took this blog post and rewrote it changing ‘boat’ to ‘butt’, among some other wonderful wordplay, and it was a fine, fine time.
This is why archives of these stupid boards are important lol.

@Third-Eye I believe he was talking about the development of…Crimson Skies I think? It was was pulp fiction steampunk kind of game. And he just had some of the weirdest game policies I had ever encountered. I can’t remember exactly, but something about how plots and scenes were set up were just wild, even if I do think my brain has tried to erase the fact that I even played there out of sheer morbid curiosity.
And then yes, he proceeded to blame everyone else for game failing because he was the One True Mush Developer who understood who game making really worked and all other forms are inadequate.
