Usually I have my PC ask them stuff like “wow that’s so weird, why do you say that?” Or “gee, I wonder why that person would have said something so nonsensical, were they drunk or something?” If the player is new i might point out some of the cultural help.
I don’t even entertain that sort of super anti-thematic thing IC; I tend to just go straight to the OOC of “oh actually maybe you don’t know but that’s not a thing in this world.” I understand that not everyone feels comfy doing that, though.

Someone once commented on how bold a choice it was for Aureth, a blond man with fair skin, to be wearing pink.
To this day I regret not going OOC to ask what they meant.
