I do not believe that those left involved at MSB are capable of running a successful online forum about text based role playing games. Whether you think that bar is high or hilariously low, they don’t cross it.
-
@Apos As with MUs, success is dependent on those judging. Even if nobody posts ever again, they will claim it is successful.
-
@Pavel yeah but they’ll know better themselves, they just won’t admit it out loud
-
simplications if you’re reading this:
I’m sorry, I fucked up. The way you showed up on MSB, the timing, and the group of posters whose statements were being mutually borrowed as fuel for each others fires, made me assume the worst about your intentions.
There are actually a fuckton of literal fascists in this hobby; Cullen for example had an iron cross as his forum avatar on HavenRPG for a while, and I’ve posted receipts elsewhere of someone going on a very explicit antisemitic & misogynistic tirade about me. On the recent thread, I also linked an example of what was basically an attack thread against me for wanting to start a pro-intersectional community for other MU*ers. So yes I am very prickly about this subject, and I like to think I’m generally good at spotting the talking points of people trying to manipulate the discourse in that direction, but in this case I misfired. Because yeah: I was there to address misogyny and victim-blaming, and in that context, the discussion about privileged groups while seemingly siding with the people doing it, looked to me like a very common tactic.
I now understand this was a misunderstanding.
Sorry I went for the throat; I was in attack mode, and attacked the wrong person.
I’d DM but lol, banned. (Which is for the best, because that was not healthy for me.)

Whoa. I honestly thought I was being too reactionary when the “healing” thread made me start thinking of Umberto Eco’s list, but it sounds like I’m not the only one who kinda got that vibe?

There are fascists in a lot of places, alas. Fascists in gaming is an interesting area people are working on, but the far right were early adopters of online spaces (including back in the BBS days). Their methods will only ever get a small percentage of the population, but if you have so many people you can access, you can get to a much greater proportion of that small number and…well.
Then you cram them in a U-Haul and try to commit a hate crime at a pride event.
ETA: Umberto Eco’s ur-Fascism is a good starting place, but I’d really recommend Griffin’s work and other developments from the New Consensus and the cultural turn in fascist studies (Though of course accepting that some of the cultural understanding really goes back to the 1970s, but that fascist studies really is a more modern emergence as a scholarly field, so that’s when those older studies got really picked up and used)

WHO SAID FASCISTS WHERE NARSON COULD SEE
-
@Narson may not remember, but we have bonded before about Umberto Eco on MSB.
Except I wasn’t sure if we were bonding or if I was being made fun of because this is the internet and idk them.
Everyone is sus.

As someone who is super into history, Norse mythology, Crusader Kings, punk rock, and RPGs, the amount of time I have to spend squinting at people with common interests and going “Okay, but are you a fucking Nazi?” is both alarming and exhausting.
-
@Kestrel don’t worry, there is 0% chance of Narson making fun of someone for talking about fascism.

This, but in Danish folklore and history nerd.

You get it on a lot of things - I have reported a lot of stuff on steam that I’ve just casually come across on games like Humans Fall Flat etc. I have a whole list of ‘Why the things we like are also Nazis’. It might be why I’m not allowed at parties.
-
@Aria Oh look, 4 of the 5 things you listed are 4 of my own interests, and my history specialization is modern European (really WW2). This is very familiar to me.
-
Okay, but…

oh god oh shit there are two of them

Seconded. I’m a white dude and it’s sometimes really anxiety inducing to talk about those kinds of interests without feeling like, “guys I swear I just like the stories, I’m not a white supremacist”. Double whammy because I also like power metal.
At least a lot of them usually don’t take long to go mask-off. I remember people using SS designs in medieval games like Mordhau or Chivalry. No it’s not a pair of lightning bolts, I know what you are.

We, uh, occasionally get Questions about that entire bookshelf full of books about WWII tactics and philosophy.
By philosophy I mean Himmleresque bullshit.

Look, I can’t lie. I would use a pair of lightning bolts because I think lightning bolts look cool.
AND THEN I WOULD BE FUCKING MORTIFIED WHEN SOMEONE TOLD ME.
