Peeve:
I have two of them
-
When people make up reasons to get you off a game when logs clearly show that their accusations are completely false.
-
When you cheat by taking a power and you add special effects like (it’s oh so addictive and feels so good to the target) for your own jollies.
Oh, it looks like I have a third.
When you manipulate someone OOCly by offering to spy on someone else so you can eventually hook up with them. And then use 2 as a reason and cheat along the way.
That is all.
-
-
That is well fucking hell!

When running a game, please pick a game system that you actually want to run and are more or less happy with as written. Why aggravate yourself and your players by trying to houserule Dungeons and Dragons into feeling like Everway? Wouldn’t everyone be happier if you just used Everway to start with?
-
Because it’s basically inevitable that there’ll be some aspects of your chosen game system you’re unhappy with, try to identify them and houserule them away before you open the floodgates to the world.
-
If there’s something you missed in steps one and two and you don’t notice it until the game’s been open for a while, consider just leaving it alone, even if it irks you. If it hasn’t come to your attention by now, it might not actually be as much of a problem as you think.
-
If you are absolutely certain that the thing you missed for several years is a problem worth houseruling away, at least try to set out all your new houserules at once and ideally include some things that will make players happy along with them.
I get it. Some game systems are kind of broken. Some things don’t start to become problematic until a game’s been going for a while. It happens, and I support fixing problems that really need to be fixed. I just don’t want to play Calvinball, you know?

@Autumn What game are you referring to that did that?!?

Like… most games that use a tabletop system will do one or all of those things at some point in their existence, in whole or in part.

I got it in my head to work on an old game idea I’d pitched a while back, but I keep finding myself ruminating on whether or not it’s worth it when the hobby is so full of creeps and dramatics. I’d really like to do some storytelling and facilitate some fun experiences for folks, but I don’t know if I have the time and energy to spend trying to keep assholes from ruining it for everyone.
-
As far as I go these days, I’m back in that “I’m wondering if this hobby is even for me” phase.
For one, I just can’t sit with an open client like I used to so Ares’ web portal has been a godsend but that artificially limits me to a single platform and slate of games.
For another, I find effort and focus are increasingly limited and I don’t really have it in me to go workshop another game character (let alone with backstory/shared connections) for some game that will fail-to-launch or just work out as an exercise in theme that fails to grab me.
I know I’ve said this before but I’m find it progressively more difficult to rustle up even a shred of inspiration for slice-of-life rp.
It probably doesn’t help that I’ve officially overdosed on supernatural* shenanigans/stories for the time being. To quote a wise man, there are too many damn wizards on my block.*Please note this isn’t me slinging barbs at anyone else’s tastes. If you all prefer ghosts and goblins and vampires and witches and/or really specific genre stuff, go fucking ham.

I’ve ended up here and this gracefully just stepped back. Haven’t RPed in months and I’ve found other things have replaced it.
I still love the people though, so I check here ~☆daily☆~

@shit-piss-love Run something invite only or semi-invite only.

That’s not a bad idea. I keep out of OOC circles in the community but I like the people here well enough. Maybe I’d open it up to people here to start and let y’all refer others.

Posting anything on BMD is pretty much the same as being public, so you might want to instead make it a more private invite to the folk you jive with best on here first. BMD is a public community rather than a private one, so anyone can be accessing stuff on here.
-
@Roz Good looking out, thank you.
-
I had a person or two reach out in private message to me here to invite me to their games. I didn’t have the spoons for it at the time, but I fucking appreciated it. So maybe if you open a game, just send them a chat you’d like them to play there. That way it’s not public but you don’t have to have Discord or other OOC connections. This coming from someone who doesn’t discord.
-
I like this. Thank you people who do this. Even if we don’t have spoons or whatever, being invited is a heck of an uplift. (well, for me.)
-
@RightMeow Curious - was it a public game? I did get an invite to an invite-only game via PM once, but it wasn’t my jam, so I never joined. It would seem weird to get an invite to a public game sent to me via PM.
Like.
Why me specifically?
Are you doing this to a bunch of people?
Is this a trap?
It’s a trap. -
I think it was a little of both. It was going to be public but wasn’t yet. The reason is it’s fairly well known here that I’m nervous about new places now. I’ve had a lot of run-ins with DownWithOPP and RuizPlayer and it’s made me almost have a PSTD response to new games. Heh.
They were just letting me know it was there and the community was safe and they would make it safe for me.

Just know that sometimes, a violent outburst is not unreasonable. Sometimes, dick punches are the appropriate response.

I just want to be the brief voice of dissent:
There are people I don’t particularly want on my game for various reasons, and who I have banned or ‘disinvited’ before they finished applying.
But they are not the majority, and I cannot overstate the joys of running a public game and meeting people who never would have made it there if we were on an invite-only system. The absolute magic of finding a whole group of players who have amazing chemistry, who are delightful OOC, who build story and theme in a way you never could’ve imagined - who you had NO IDEA existed despite decades of doing this - is truly fantastic. It’s a big part of why I build and run games.
My experience on invite-only games is that you’ll still have player problems. People who get along with A won’t get along with C just because B is friends with both. Invites don’t prevent them, IME.
It does take some thick skin and the willingness to have some hard conversations and close doors to run a game - public or private. But that’s honestly, for me at least, such a small, small part of it. The joys are really immense, too.
