hobos Temporary Ban Discussion Thread
-
@Tez I just went back and re-read it, and it does say “in this thread” or on related topics, but I for sure read it as a blanket ban. I might just have poor reading comprehension though.
-
@farfalla I think it’s more likely that people are primed to be a bit raw about that stuff right now than that you have poor reading comprehension.
-
The main thing I want to avoid, and this is again speaking only for myself, is creating a “this is the bash MSB and everyone that still posts there” thread. I don’t care what MSB has to say about it, and I earnestly don’t want to stifle healthy debate and discussion, but right now it’s just poking at the open wound and not letting it scab over.
Again, just my view and my reasons for supporting the decision.
ETA: I’m sorry that this sounds incredibly paternalistic to the point of being condescending. You’re all adults and you can make your own decisions about what you think, how you express your feelings, and what you engage with.
-
It could be worth adding a line to the policies that includes something about adding temporary restrictions or increased moderation - that are open to user feedback - around particularly heated subjects. Or something like that, which says ‘hey yeah sometimes we might as for things to pause’ so that it’s in there as a policy that can be 1) known and 2) pointed to.
-
@farfalla We’re definitely going to aim for something more substantial than current guidelines, without being overly detailed and restrictive. So, more than making up rules as we go but not so byzantine that we’re stymied by “technically not against the rules so it has to stay” arguments.
-
@Pavel Okay. I just want to make sure we don’t end up repeating “I just made up this rule” “what? that’s not a rule” “straight to jail.”
-
I think a temporary ban on links/screenshots to there for the purposes of discussing the “split” is fine, and a blanket ban FOREVER on any sort of thread activity that is coordination of trolling somewhere else- - be that MSB, reddit, or any game. That is a thing that folks used to do that should be off limits from the start here (or any community forum).

I’m especially upvoting your ETA.

Definitely, it’s something we’re all exceptionally keen to avoid. But we also want to retain the… authority, I guess, to draw a line under things when it becomes unhealthy.
We all know of at least one discussion on WORA or MSB or wherever that just dragged on to the point of being a headache that could’ve easily been solved had someone said “okay, back to your corners fighters, new round in ten.”
-
@Pavel I don’t disagree! I’m just advocating for that to be codified.
-
@farfalla Absolutely. With very strict “if you’re involved, you don’t get a say” admin recusal baked right in.
-
Just 'cause I’m not completely clear: is this the one thread for all future admin actions discussions? Or is it limited to the “hobos got banned” situation?
Because I would like to put this thread on ignore. I’m really not interested in more screenshots from Derp’s forum or rehashing the situation; I just want distance from it. Y’all can keep talking about it, no judgment. I’d just rather not. For me.
But if this is going to be used for all future updates, it’d be awkward to have it on ignore.

That was my intention, but I don’t see a reason not to split out each decision to its own discussion thread.
-
@KarmaBum I’m in favor of a thread per situation for this reason and the reason that it would be easier to track / search. So let’s call this the Hobos & Bannings Thread … Thread.
-
How about, “If you want to discuss admin action and there’s not a thread for it already, make a thread about the action as appropriate in the feedback section under X and Y parameters” as direction to your userbase? It’s not containing it as much (to the thread) but having a specific area set aside is…close? And I think it might actually end up as less work (if you don’t make a thread for an action that people don’t care enough to make a thread about, then…it doesn’t happen, right? but if YOU make the thread, people gonna people).
-
-
@IoleRae I prefer to make the thread personally. To give the air, at least, of “no, seriously, discuss it please.”

Dude seems to think there is a polite way to demand that people relive their trauma for him so he can litigate whether or not it’s valid, and that refusing to grant him that authority over their lives victimizes him. That makes him a danger, because he can’t see other people as existing outside of what he wants from them.
Give him a second chance in a week if you want to, but I’m getting major “ladies, don’t take a drink from him” vibes.
Look, the ban was fair, but implying that I’m a rapist is not fair. I wrote this huge angry post about my entire life story but thankfully I was temp banned and couldn’t post it. In short, I’m not a rapist, and you all acting like I am one and talking about the ‘trauma responses’ of my ‘victims’ … makes me doubt that every actual predator that you all have dogpiled in this hobby is even a predator at all. Considering some of the predatory behavior I’ve seen and heard of from some of you, and from those you protect by completely ignoring their abuses, it obviously has less to do with behavior and more to do with where friendship/convenience falls. If you want people to listen to you, you’re going to have to be more fair and less biased.

Nope. We are not doing this today. I understand you are upset and I am not validating their comments about you. However, we are not going to go down the road you are steering. Please just don’t. As a person who dealt with one of these people, don’t invalidate my experience because you are angry at someone or something said to you.
Please just don’t.
