What happened, man?

The most publicly-visible online spaces for RPGs have gone downhill over the last decade, but it really started swirling down the drain as the COVID shutdowns kicked off. Forums like this used to be extremely active, with dozens of daily users and hundreds of monthly users. It was niche, sure, but people actually used it, actually cared. You could meet people and start games. Now, not so much. It’s slow. It’s really the same dozen or so people over and over again.
You’ve driven your best people away because they weren’t in lockstep with gay race communism. Until around 2020, people were still willing to offer compromises like “free speech,” an agreement to set politics and to a degree personality clashes aside to play a good game online, either in the form of a MU*, a VC+VTT, “asynchronous” play-by-post, or what-not. But that was rejected, and at first it seemed like you needed to be hard left in order to play RPGs. But those people who left? The Corpse Kings, the Sandy Petersens, the Blaine Pardoes, the Alexander Macrisses? They went on and made cool shit without you.
We’ve got our own milieu now, and we gatekeep troons and the like all the time. They show up, and then they get removed. It’s very satisfying not having to care if something is “problematic,” only concerning ourselves with if it’s cool, if it’s pertinent to the game, if this thing adds to it or detracts from it. Getting rid of the gaymosexuals and the harridans has done wonders for us.
So like… how do you recover from this? How do you fix your shit so that you can be let back into polite society? Is it possible for you to reform, or are you stuck, mired in this ideology forever?

@OT-The-Real eat shit and die loser
-
@labsunlimited Can you imagine how cool he felt writing that, dick in his hand, Dread up on a TOR browser so he can feel like a badass hacker when it’s really just Reddit for losers

Half of these words are made up, I swear. It must be tough living in such a bizarre self-made delusion.

@OT-The-Real
I know this guy is banned but I was sat here looking at this wondering who tf the people mentioned even are, and for posterity’s sake, here’s the “cool shit” we’re “missing out on”.Corpse Kings
Not a creator, but a game. Corpse Kings is print-on-demand RPG rules set created by Wade K. Savage. The art is AI.
The text is… probably also AI.
Sandy Petersen
Sandy was the principal author on Call of Cthulhu back in 1981. As far as I can tell that’s about the only thing he’s ever done in the RPG space. He was Definitely Canceled Due to Woke, though. In 1981.
ETA: I did some more looking on this and it turns out Petersen has recently made transphobic comments online and will be guest of honor at an upcoming 30-50 person anti-woke gaming “convention”, which I assume is what got him on the honor roll here. Still no new RPG systems I can find.Blaine Lee Pardoe
Pardoe was a writer for BattleTech (released in 1984) but was not its sole creator. He wrote a number of novels for the series but has not done any game work since 2012. The publisher of BattleTech material publicly disowned Pardoe in 2022 due to “online activities which do not align with Catalyst’s publishing vision.”
Alexander Macris
Macris went to West Point but didn’t finish, changing gears and eventually attending Harvard Law School. He then went on to create The Escapist, an e-zine that was notable for its role in the GamerGate controversy around 2014. Macris, at least, seems to be still creating game content and paying actual artists. He has two main systems, a sword-and-sandals concept ripped from Conan (Adventurer, Conqueror, King; which you may recognize from the titles of those Conan books) and an anti-woke superhero system called Ascendant.
Macris was the CEO of Milo Entertainment, a company founded by alt-right troll Milo Yiannopoulos, until the company imploded following the death of its crypto-billionaire funder. Yiannopoulos has a range of repugnant views and behaviors that you can easily find. You will recognize his name from the Gamergate Forbes article above. Weird!
Macris is also so hostile and litigious against anyone who criticizes his systems that he and his systems are banned subjects on RPG.net and the RPG subreddit.
So yeah I guess you could say we are super missing out.

Oh wow. He really pwned us.

@Trashcan Man, we could have been tabletopping with incels all this time?

I struggle to understand what would ever incense a person to be proud that they completed a single Udemy course on how to use chatGPT let alone three, lmfao.

For some stupid reason probably related to deep-seated self-loathing, I decided to go and look up some of those made up words myself to see if any of this made sense.
What I discovered in my three minutes of Google was that the vast majority of them are actually slurs, but the sort that gets (yes) made up by deranged little subcultures as a means of communicating with each other, sort of the way incels use “Chad” to mean something specific. I’m not surprised, but I am disappointed. I thought being a gaymosexual was kind of funny, like the opposite of shouting no homo.

He has a large number of credits for id Software (level design on Doom and Doom II), Microprose (worked as a dev on Sid Meier’s Pirates and Civilization), and Ensemble Studios (was a developer on all parts of the first three Age of Empires games).
He’s since rolled back around to doing freelance work for Chaosium occasionally (though I imagine with their new direction that’s probably all but done) and making supplements for other games with a very Cthulhu bent.

You’ve driven your best people away
Best people feels like a real stretch here, as does the idea that they were driven away. Unless by driven away he means banned because they were despicable, intolerant pricks, who now sulk about the rejection in whatever ChatGPT hellscape that will actually allow them in.
@OT-The-Real said in What happened, man?:
and we gatekeep
Oh nooooo. Anyway.
@Trashcan said in What happened, man?:
GamerGate controversy around 2014.
Of course these losers were involved with GamerGate somehow.
Honestly if they’ve created their own little pit of a game, good. I’ll consider that a containment zone, and they can have it. Stay there, I’ll be happy over here with my super gay communist woke liberal friends.

I still think using “Sandy Petersen” and “cool shit” in the same sentence is a hilarious oxymoron.
MAP13: Downtown was so messy and the progression was so hard to follow he had to paint a giant arrow on the floor saying where to go next. Doom 1 Episode 3 was a mess. His stuff has always been amateur hour at best so I’m unsure why he’s held up as a shining example of quality here.
I guess my point is, a work isn’t automatically good if the creator matches your ideology.

Yo, so I decided to dodge your ban for fun. Turns out, my thread is the only that’s been posted in in just over a week. Before that? Three weeks ago. Even on other boards of this forum, like Rough and Rowdy, you have one thread that’s been posted in recently, and the rest are literally three weeks old at a minimum since being touched. The last time Game Ads got touched was literally months ago.
Your forum is dead, and the only posts it gets are desperate, cockamamie attempts to discredit my (correct) view that you tried to take a hobby and hollow it out, but in reality you ceded it to the people you hate most without realizing it. Oh no, you didn’t like MAP13 from 30yrs ago? LOL!
I’ve been banned for days and you can’t help but cope, seethe, and dilate about how your ilk has been gatekept from everything worthwhile, and pointing it out does brighten my day a little bit considering how fundamentally malignant you lot have proven yourselves to be over the last 15yrs.

@Perfect-Paz How empty and boring is your life that this is what you derive joy from?
You’ve made it clear you profoundly disagree with everything that’s going on here: copy. We get it. Your vitriol isn’t welcome, you can go about your business, and in your position, 99% of people would.
But not you. You’re special. You’re going to bide your time and wait, and make a new profile for the express purpose of telling us how unbothered and above it all you are. Well done, mate. You really showed us.
If the forum is slow and the hobby is in atrophy, that’s not half, not a quarter, not an iota as pathetic as you lingering in the wings, salivating over every response with the intensity of a thousand unpaid therapy bills and dreaming of all the ways you think you’re cooler than us.
You’re a loser, mate. Flat out, you’re a fucking loser. You came here to try to talk down to people you don’t like because, I don’t know, they don’t hate trans people? And you just proved exactly why we’re all better off without anyone like you anywhere near us. We’re happy you don’t like us. I’m fucking thrilled. I don’t want to play on a game with you, I would rather play with 9 people who are nothing like you than 100 with the offchance that you’re one of them. That is easy, easy calculus, my soft-skulled dude.
Screenshot this and take it back to your cave of troglodytes where you can all have a good chuckle about how you pwned the gay commies, then maybe go have a shower and wipe the fungal crust off of your ass, you gang of mushrooms.

The publisher of BattleTech material publicly disowned Pardoe in 2022 due to “online activities which do not align with Catalyst’s publishing vision.”The Pardoe thing is weird, I half followed it on Twitter at the time. Someone called his stuff dumb and dude tried to nuke them with an expensive legal battle. I didn’t ever figure out how it finished, though. So I assume a non-zero amount of ‘online activities’ include, but are not limited to, trying to sue fans of the IP into oblivion.
