@bear_necessities You may be right. There may of been a point early on where I was trying to get my bearings on running a game, so I was inherently trying to keep things smaller. As I’ve expanded in my ability, added more staff and storytellers, I never really did put a modified post to say “Hey, we can take more people now.” While at the same I’ll be the first to say I never had any kind of grand plans to have this huge massive game like The Reach or Firan had in their heydays. Not want I wanted at all. In fact I always appreciated the fact that Tat when she ran Spirit Lake had a hard cap number of how many players could be active at one time. I actually pulled that page out and decided that 40 to 45 was number with active goal of 25 if I had to set myself with a goal of what would be idea.
I always assumed that 7N’s biggest detracting point was how slow it moves. Which I haven’t hidden, because I intentionally pace it the way it is because people are generally busy, hence why I make that point clear.
I personally apologize for not adjusting my earlier posts to suggest that I would turn people away. Never would I do that. And I’d like to smack around previous Testament for wording it that if I did(I probably did, but now I’m going to look at my previous posts).

@Testament It’s also worth keeping in mind that @Tat has a reputation for running a game that a lot of people remember very fondly.
and also lol mushers are the weirdest fucking bunch of people, active games right now are like 2 comic book games, one about werewolves in wyoming, i still don’t know what keys is about except ponies, one about pretending to be people pretending to be actors, & now alt-pern except on earth with magic
I wouldn’t let this group’s opinion worry you overmuch.

You make good points, but I know I was also just talking through my own feelings, while still be rational of those feelings.
I’m apparently supposed to feel them, accept them, and just keep going on after, but don’t let them hold you. Also, my other staffers smacked me around in a very affectionate manner.

i fucking hate when the first impression i’m going to give is falling flat on my face, but…this week has been so exhausting outside of game time that i guess that’s just what’s going to happen. i’m not even physically tired per se. i’m just emotionally drained AF. RP helps quite a bit, it’s frustrating to not be able to do more than that though. next week i’m taking significant time off so maybe that will help.

Wanting to get back into a MU I haven’t really touched in over a year, but I am just constantly getting distracted by fun things that don’t require a ton of effort and focus.
I wish finding fun RP times didn’t feel like such work to me.

That said, I understand perfectly what you mean, Testament. I don’t think that there is a magical formula; even people known to write great games sometimes create a flop and sometimes, what you thought would be five buddies just doing their thing takes off and becomes huge. It’s largely outside our control, really, because it depends so much on who joins up and what else is available at the moment.

@L-B-Heuschkel That’s kind of the thing I’m learning. What I find myself doing so often is worrying about what I’m doing, and if what I’m doing is enough, and if it’s not enough, is that some kind representation on me as a person. I understand that those thoughts aren’t the most rational, and really it’s my own depression working against me. Which is ironic, because writing, plotrunning, and creating lore is some of the very things that make me less depressed.
But you’re right, there’s no magical formula and I’ve played on plenty of games that I often wondered weren’t bigger because of how good they were. Maybe Seven Nations won’t be bigger than 14 or so players that it currently has. Maybe it’ll get 40, I don’t know. But I really should be happy to have people that seem to enjoy it.

@L-B-Heuschkel I think a known good game-runner is also a factor. Cobalt is absolutely a huge part of why The Pack blew up overnight, and Tat is absolutely a huge part of why her new game got to capacity so quickly. I think another factor is game theme. If there’s a gap in the ‘market’ that people are jonesing for and they see a new game where they can play that stuff, they’re going to roll on in. Not saying that Testament is a schlub! He’s a good guy who runs a good game, and there is also that roll of the proverbial dice and the capricious whims of MUers to contend with.

I absolutely loved Welcome to the Euphoria, but it was not a success. A lot of that was on me. A lot of that was on the pandemic. A lot of that was that the fact that it was a completely original theme that people didn’t have a lot to draw off of already. I think if I had done BSG, Farscape, Trek, StarWars, it would have worked a little longer.

I don’t believe that are too many other modern day “urban” fantasy mushes using ares and FS3, which have both become very popular. And I 100% attribute the mega growth of Pack to that.
That is all to say, I know what it feels like to put into work for something and then not feel good enough because it doesn’t have the same numbers as other games. Heck, I looked at Shattered’s wiki and now I feel second rate. x(
But I’m not Tat and I do things differently than Tat does. I’m not you either and I do things differently than you. The amount of world building and writing you’ve done for 7N is very impressive, and again, makes feel a little inadequate with the amount of info that’s up on my wiki.
But I’m more of a throw the idea out there, and fill in the details as I go type of storyteller. So I shouldn’t be comparing myself to you two.
We’re all good game runners and I know it is easier said than done to “don’t compare yourself”, but… Try not to.

It also doesn’t feel great to hear about this successful new mush that…isn’t advertised anywhere you can see it. Private games are awesome!
Hearing about how successful and fun and amazing they are…is not fun for the uninvited.
Not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but hey.
