@L-B-Heuschkel When I see an Ares game with no live scenes, it reads to me as ‘no one wants/has time to play.’
That’s fair. It’s just not always true. Keys averages 40-50 scenes running at a time, the vast majority of which are asynchronous.
The thing is – a lot of people don’t have time to play, at least not in live scenes in US primetime. A lot of us are in other timezones, suffer from conditions and situations, and what have you.
I mean isn’t that… the entire point @Polk is trying to make? It’s cool that there’s a place to play where that happens and thumbs up for creating that space! But for some of us, async play isn’t something we go looking for and it’s a “red flag” for those people who aren’t looking for async play and just want to knock out a scene in 2-3 hours. Because I also don’t have a ton of time to play and I also don’t have the mental capacity to pose once a day/week/month whatever in a scene. I lose the thread too easy.
I definitely wouldn’t mind seeing the private scenes on a separate tab or able to be hidden. If I see the game as having ‘45 active scenes’ and then go to the scenes tab and there’s no scenes listed, I know that game isn’t for me. It still meets the same goal of being transparent about what people are doing.

I get scenes in ‘private settings’ ( the ares tag and the private residence) are not all sexy fun time
Or are they
-
@Testament I wouldn’t want that, either. I don’t think anyone’s location should be visible unless in RPable places.
-
@tsar Ahaha. They could be. I don’t care either way. I just don’t want to see scenes I can’t join.
-
I wish they were hidden too. I don’t think anyone is wrong in what they have expressed, it is just a personal preference that hurts no one and helps only the person with the preference.
-
@bear_necessities This is fair and I do use it that way, but I’d rather have the default setting be for players. Players are looking at the scene list every day, potential players are just looking at it once. I can always use availability of open scenes and logs and other things to try and gauge activity style.

Yes, and it is a valid point. I just feel that once again, the discussion has come around to the usual old chestnut of people who can’t play live for four hours straight in EST suck and also, they are elitist snobs.
-
@L-B-Heuschkel Really? My impression was everyone recognizing that some people prefer or require async, but still wished to express their own feelings and views on it. Also, I don’t see how having both is a mutually exclusive proposition.

It isn’t. I think for me, it’s tiresome to constantly be made to feel like I’m just not good enough because I am disabled and playing from another timezone.
People should play exactly the way they enjoy (and are capable of). But I do feel that they should own it – if someone’s preference is live scenes with five minutes’ wait tops between poses, that’s entirely legit but it doesn’t mean that games, where that is not the dominant option, are dead or bad.
Play style is personal. People are very free to not play with me if they feel that I am too slow, too ESL, or too whatever. But it’s a choice they are making for themselves. Please don’t infer that people who have different preferences are bad.
-
@L-B-Heuschkel My pure point was a peeve: If I look at a game like that, as a new player, I feel like I have no entry point.
I make no judgements. I mean no disparagement at all, in any real way.
Just a peeve. My own habits. In a game where everyone’s semi-idle on the web, I wouldn’t even know how to get started.
-
@L-B-Heuschkel I don’t think anyone has said or implied that. I’ve only seen people stating that primarily asynch games aren’t for them. Based on Keys’ success there is clearly an audience and a need for it, but it’s good for both pro- and non-asynchers to know what style of game it is ahead of time. I don’t have any negative perceptions about those players as people, and I haven’t seen anyone else say they do either.
It’s possible that the term “red flag” is what’s causing that perception, because that’s usually associated with a “bad” thing, but in this case I really think it’s just being used as “knowing I can’t play the pace I prefer means this won’t be a good fit for me.” In which case, everyone’s time is better served if they don’t try to make it fit.
-
@L-B-Heuschkel You are literally implying that people with a preference other than yours who express that opinion are bad by putting words in their mouth about non-EST elitists.
They want to go to an ares game and not see a bunch of private scenes with a preference for live scenes. While that might not fit with your game, that doesn’t mean the option shouldn’t be available at all in ares code.
-
I’m frustrated sometimes by it feeling like it’s being implied I don’t do enough to facilitate the hobby for people in other timezones.
But then I try to remember it’s not really about me personally.
-
@L-B-Heuschkel yes, that’s what we’re all saying, nailed it
-
@tsar I know I do what I can, and I’m content to do my best, heh.
-
We have beaten this horse so badly that it’s not just dead, it’s mince meat. Seriously, every single time someone brings up this subject it somehow immediately turns to them saying non-US or people with chronic disabilities suck or shouldn’t be in the hobby. No one said that!!! It wasn’t until you @L-B-Heuschkel brought it up that it even became a thing.
Listen. Sometimes you have to realize that your problems are yours alone and not everyone else’s respond to fix. My problem is that I can’t play async scenes - I lose the thread too easily, I can’t remember what we are doing and frankly I can’t even remember who my character is. That’s my problem! It’s not anyone else’s responsibility to fix. There are currently no ares games that suite my play style and so instead of being on here like omg you guys are saying I suck!!! I’m just like well I guess I won’t play right now and that’s cool.
-
the real key is just to not be able to play at all anymore, because you know, vague life reasons.
but also always remind people that you’re around.
hi guys!

@Meg never RPing is a perfectly valid RP style
-
Seeing a bunch of private scenes is just visual clutter for me, it doesn’t have to have anything to do with how much private or public RP is happening. It’s that it’s visual clutter of information that is irrelevant.
