@Mourne Literally everyone had to go through the learning curve and remembers it well. No one will roast you for using the wrong form of address or not being sure. You can always ask people or on the Info channel and everyone will clear it up right away. You can also read lore info ahead of time on the main site: https://play.arxgame.org/topics/

As a potential new player, I would love a primer of ‘Common Knowledge’ that was placed somewhere easily accessible.
Feel this, even having played the game before it’s weird coming back as I poke at an OC app and piecing together what I need to sweat about the current world state and what I don’t. I get that everybody goes through it and the in-game channels are helpful for in-the-moment confusion, but it’s definite a lot. I’ve actually found the unofficial player wiki easier to wade through than the game site itself in the last few days, but mileage varies.

@Mourne To start off, your BEST FRIEND on the game is going to be the
lore/search
command. Thelore
command gives you access to a ton of files about the theme and lore, and these are generally going to be things any character could reasonably know. These files are all also accessible on the website – hop over to the World page and find the “Lore Topics” section. However, you can’t search for keywords there, whereas in-game you can dolore/search <keyword>
to find a lore files with a specific word in them. (It’ll also include any @clues your PC has with the keyword as well. @clues are more esoteric knowledge, they’re things that your average person WON’T necessarily know, so having the @clue means your PC has the knowledge. But since you’re an OC, you’ll be starting off with probably 0 @clues.)As far as files to read when starting out, I’d suggest:
lore arvum
(https://play.arxgame.org/topics/lore/86/#Arvum) - general overview of the Compact, the Great Houses, etc.lore pantheon
and the subsequent files for the individual gods (https://play.arxgame.org/topics/lore/2/#Pantheon) - overview of the main religion in the Compact, and each of the 13 gods also have their own main file, e.g.,lore vellichor
,lore gloria
, etc. You can find them on the same page as the link, just focus on the ones that are titled with JUST the god’s name, not the deeper dive files you’ll find there.lore unexpected canon
(https://play.arxgame.org/topics/lore/3/#Unexpected Canon) - The major theme differences you’ll see to what people might assume/expect from this general area of ‘medievalish fantasy’. Stuff like the lack of gender roles, surprisingly good medicine, etc.lore principles of the great houses
(https://play.arxgame.org/topics/lore/3/#Principles of the Great Houses) - A good culture overview of what makes the different fealties unique.lore timeline
(https://play.arxgame.org/topics/lore/166/#Timeline) - Straight up timeline of known history of the Compact! On-cam game stuff starts around the 1002 AR mark in therelore arx season 1 recap
(https://play.arxgame.org/topics/lore/166/#Arx Season 1 Recap) - A nice recap of the first big season of the game that ran from 1002 AR-1006 AR in timeline terms.lore abandoned
andlore prodigal
(https://play.arxgame.org/topics/lore/103/ the intro blurb and then https://play.arxgame.org/topics/lore/103/#prodigal) - Abandoned (people living in Arvum but outside the Compact) and Prodigals (those born as Abandoned who then swore fealty to the Compact) are a major recurring part of the theme.

I don’t know if this was strictly correct, exactly, but I just ended up playing my PC like an NPC who’d just been plucked off of the sidelines. She knew absolutely nothing except what was in her little bubble of influence and openly mocked people for their supernatural musings, had hazy recollections of the supernatural events that had happened before she’d hit the grid, and it wasn’t until she’d talked it out at length with a patient friend (who gently fed her clues), that she was able to accept that maybe something was happening that was weird. This made it much easier to deal with the weirdness of the past, at least.
-
@Herja Yes, hello. When can I expect your NPCs to do this to me?

@Roz Puffin tried to drop a boulder on my head so that sounds right.
Scraps has dropped multiple boulders on me. In one plot.
That mage was an asshole. It was great.

When I was actively playing Arx, I had a Google document I would just paste relevant information to. Which, last I looked at it, is now very unwieldy due to the fact that it’s the same doc for multiple characters, defined only by various color text.
I’m sure it’s all very relevant…somehow.
I almost created an Excel macro to help filter and search for clue stuff since, at the time, I had all of my clues between both characters set into an Excel doc. I had thought, at the time, that it would be really useful to create a macro that would easy separation and filtering of said information.
…and then I realized that would be far too much work.
