Yeah. Could do without the “hey” or “waves” page. Just say the thing. Or include the thing with the hey or the wave.
ETA: I more exactly mean when I have to wait several minutes for the ask, or have to initiate the “what’s up?” before the ask comes.
-
I mean, if it’s a friend then just a wave makes sense, of course.
If it’s someone I don’t know very well, or a stranger (especially if I’m staffing), then I know there’s another reason for it, and it feels like the most awkward thing ever to have what amounts to small talk with a customer that just approached you at the service desk.

no one ever greet me

Engaging with people is scary, I get that. But it’s just as scary to have a stranger page you randomly without knowing who they are or what they want.
“Hi, I’m <short description of who you are> and I <why you are paging>.”
e.g.: Hi, I’m Pavel the Camarilla Toreador and I was looking over your wiki and saw we had some RP hooks in common and wanted to see if you were interested in RP about them.

Maybe a better example, imagine calling up someone you don’t know on the phone and asking them how their day’s been, rather than “hello, I’m <name>, I’m calling for <reason>”.

And this is why I will let the phone ring and they can text me if they need.

@tsar Hi, have time to chat for a sec?
And then I follow this up by not saying anything again for 30 minutes.

@helvetica this is the most evil thing I’ve read in some time

I think I get why people just wave instead of saying something with substance a person can respond to. I think it’s like when people set themselves as wanting RP, but when you ask them what they want to do, they say, “Oh, I’m up for whatever.” They want you to be the one to do the work of making a conversation and/or a scene happen. I’m less sure why they think that approach is a good thing in either instance, but it sure does feel like they’re related behaviors, right?
