What's your tell?

I used to use double spaces when I was real young, because I actually thought that’s how you were supposed to do sentence structure. It wasn’t until much later in life that I was told that’s not how that works. I realized that I wasn’t sure if believing that I had been told that in school was legit or if it was the Mandela Effect at work.
Is legit. Typewriters, you needed to double space at the end of a sentence. The APA didn’t change their stance on this being the “correct” way to do things until 2019.
https://apastyle.apa.org/style-grammar-guidelines/punctuation/space-after-period
Note the date You can find news articles about the change too.

@Meg I don’t know if I’ve ever RP’d with you, but if I had to guess what your tell is, it’d be that you’re proactive and deliberate in every pose.

Wait no I changed my mind, I think turgid is @Jumpscare’s tell! In the TS they aren’t having, lol.
Well now I want to TS just to see how terrible I can make it.

I know my usual thing is that I emphasize a lot of words by using * word *. I also know that I tend to play older characters, because my mind can no longer associate with being 20 anymore because anytime I try the character just sounds generally whiny.
My brain does absolutely notice what other people use for their emphasis characters. Are you
*this type*
? Maybe/this type/
? Or even//THIS type//
? SOMETHING ELSE?I also tend to notice the folks who double space after periods, if only because it’s uncommon.
.* I * use //ALL OF THEM//
you’ll never catch me
-
Starting sentences with prepositions. Using -this- to emphasize a word. Talking about eyebrows a lot.

but if I had to guess what your tell is,
lol this sounds like a fun game

One thing I definitely do is what I call A/N metaposing or just metaposing (I know other people use the term, not sure in the same way??) Something like, “Sue jumped down. Sure, she could’ve just taken the stairs, but apparently risking broken ankles is in this week.”
I also am a chatterbox. Sometimes my chars are too. But I definitely am.
and speaking of, my characters are often either some flavor of:
- Bitter/jaded/apathetic and competent in some very specific field
- Nervous (and troubled) young adult
- Enthusiastic (sometimes frivolous) social bulldozers.
And I do a lot of ‘A (action fragment)’ midpose. A nod. A tilt of her head. A hand rises. A quick grin.
idk these may just be things I am self-conscious about.
-
Em dashes, “a beat,” describing small changes in body language, “I mean,” characters with tactical knowledge/background, characters with sports knowledge/background, and answering OOC questions on channels.
-
@Roadspike
I’m addicted to “I mean” as a vocal tic to the point where I’ve tried to stop, but idk if it’s successful. -
Robert Sheehan is my tell.
It’s not always me. But it is often me.
-
Whew, this is a tough one. Hmm. Maybe…
A) My ESL still shines through, and there are certain things that I can never stop spelling a certain way. I use a mix of British and American spelling (it’s “colour” not “color”, but it’s also “truck” instead of “lorry”), but I also misspell a lot, or use weird grammar. For years I would also smash colors together a la “whitepink”, “greyblue” etc, because that’s how we do in my native language.B) My OOC behavior. I am very chatty, very friendly, use and abuse smileys from to ^_^ without shame.
C) I seem to have fallen into a pattern of making either beautiful evil or monstrous good: I love noir femme fatales as well as characters that look innocuous and harmless but are actually completely vile or amoral, but I also love making characters that look terrifying or grotesque but are actually super kind.
-
I have no idea what my tell might be! The fact that I just tell everyone who I am! haha. I’m sure there’s some posing styles that make it obvious, but most recently people who knew me figured out who I was because of wiki usernames.
-
The last few times I thought I was quietly stepping back onto a game a couple people seemed to immediately know, lol, so I must have one??? But I’d just be guessing as to what it is.
Aside from being a complete goober OOC.
-
I refuse to use paragraphs. Also I use ‘as if’ way way too often.

Something like, Wizz spin Jumpscare!
I don’t know who it is, but someone does that, and I see you, whoever you are. And I like what you’re spinning.

Shit, I use this far too often in OOC talk, less IC.
-
I’m double posting, because I noticed this as I was finishing a pose. I realize that my characters(not all depending)often grin so fucking much that I’m wondering if I’m just playing someone with behavioral problems.
-
@Jumpscare said in What's your tell?:
[…] turgid […]
I almost want to take this as a challenge to use turgid in a non-smut situation, but I am teh laze.
My tells, uh… much as I want it to be amazing lewds because I have a brand… it’s probably fake pretendy words that sortaish make sense, to a degree.
Endless run-on sentences and problematic punctuation; I use them more for the vibe than how they should actually work.
If I decide to venture into purple prose, it comes across more like an SNL skit than actual writing, which… could be an improvement of other peoples’ purple prose?
-
I still abuse ellipses. My tells are more OOC though, like spreadsheets and guides. I can’t help myself!
Once someone asked if I was me because I was being helpful/nice and that was the coolest thing ever
Also ALLCAPS a lot. A LOT
-
I know I have them (though there have been many times where apparently even people who know me well didn’t realize an alt was mine, that happened quite a few times with Edris, but I wonder if perhaps gender is involved there), but I don’t know what they are. I’m pretty sure most of my tells are OOC chatting.
