I think the short answer is that the person making the decisions doesn’t know for sure that they’re a bad actor.

They might have heard rumours. But people lie. And every messy conflict has two sides coming away with two different inaccurate stories even if they don’t -think- they’re lying. Gamerunners aren’t wrong if they want to judge a player by their firsthand experiences with that player rather than an incomplete narrative.

Disclaimer: I’m not on the grapevine so don’t take this as commentary on any specific situation that might be currently unfolding.

I think it’s a combination of this and one of those old nerd fallacies about avoiding exclusion, and it’s that latter idea that causes the most problems. At least anecdotally.

I’ve had to turn the auto-convert feature off in Word for when I do my – (that is two hyphens, often converted to a dash of some kind, be it en or em. I never learned the difference.) because it was getting pulled up by the anti-AI checker on my submitted work and it’s easier to just… not deal with that.
