I play the gamut in characters but they always have flaws to match their strengths. It doesn’t need to be a perfect balance, but I don’t believe perfection is achievable, and trying to do so just makes things super awkward.

I play characters who are sometimes special snowflakes and go against the grain, I play characters who are the stereotypical ‘book’ idea of a concept, really just depends on my mood.

I have never, ever, had a personal association with my character there.

They aren’t me.

I would be very weirded out that someone thought that about me.

The only association I have with my character is that as their creator, and the person who decides what they do, when they do fucked up things… that’s on me. I made that choice. The idea that I didn’t choose to do something, that the character would do that somehow makes it right?

Nope.

Sure, the character might do something a certain way, but I wrote the character, and I can just as easily have them not do the thing that ruins things for others. Maybe the sociopath had a conscience for half a second, if it’s better for the RP and enjoyment of the game for others.

Decisive I know.

@Mourne While I agree overall with what you said, I do want to speak on the topic of character choices.

Yes, it is of paramount importance that the choices a character makes don’t diminish (and usually improve) the fun of other people. And yes, ultimately, it is the player who makes the choices for the character.

However, I have found that a character who is also an authentic person does make their own choices, at least abstractly. Obviously, they don’t exist, so they do not make a choice per se, but the creator does set up a consistent internal logic to a character to the point where there are things a character will and will not do.

So the creator’s responsibility is not just to make the choices, but to make sure that the internal logic they have created for their characters allows for such beneficial-to-others’-fun choices to be made.

Back when I’d do TS, I had someone give me the “This is so hot” OOC message. And, because I’m a friendly person who’s totally fine with OOC, I was curious and asked, “Oh, really? What about it is hot?”

Turns out that’s not at all what someone wants to hear.
