On Silent Heaven, I’m open about the fact that everything is logged, and only I have access to logs. This is primarily so that I can zip up someone’s logs and send them to the player once their character has finished their time in Silent Heaven. I don’t look at logs unless there’s cause for concern raised by a player and I’ve received permission from that player. It’s been an invaluable resource when dealing with problem players.

When you launch a new game, your playerbase has little to no trust in you. They’ve been burned countless times in the past, so why would they? It’s only through repeated acts of goodwill on a near-daily basis that players can gradually begin to trust. And one wrong step can erode that trust. All you can do is apologize, take the loss, and focus on doing better.

Overall, my recommendation is to build in whatever security features you feel most comfortable with. While full logging can help in some instances, the most important thing is to be responsive to your community. When they first come to you with a problem, they’re taking a huge leap of faith that you’ll respond to their issues in a positive manner. And that’s what matters most. Even the most robust security features are pointless if you’re not out there caring for your players.

Here’s where we noticed it first:

I really love the idea, and love that it’s catching on. I think it’s great for keeping players from being blindsided either by something happening in a scene that they weren’t expecting, or from having their characters chewed out ICly for something that’s just part of the game world.

Which is very telling, in a way. It would be no trouble at all for a banned person to slip back into a game, provided they could change their bad habits and not tell anyone/not pursue the same dramas and chars they got banned over.

Can confirm, have done it. I don’t advise it, but if you’ve made a genuine change or the behaviour isn’t usual for you then it’s relatively easily done.

@Cobalt Not your fault! 🙂 I don’t blame you in the slightest. What RP I did have was enjoyable, especially in what staff-run scenes you had the time for.

I’ve come to the conclusion that matters have silently changed with the second of the two, and as such I needed to keep my distance from them, including Discord.

Before you close the book on this friendship, you might consider asking the person. People lie. This includes staffers on MUs. Sometimes people add something to make their position seem more justified. I would not be at all surprised if the staffer involved had ONE trusted person tell them you were a problem on channels, but told you it was multiple complaints about your behavior on channels and in pages. Even less surprising would be if there were a few remarks about the channel-chat (very likely not even ‘eww, I am uncomfortable’ but ‘hmm, this is a possible red-flag, you might wanna keep an eye on that player’ comments) and none of the three people you paged said anything.

@Artemis Thank you! I’m really glad to get the perspective of someone still very young. I’m sorry you went through the stress and hurt parts (which I can empathize with, even though I’m older and was never so young in the hobby) but I’m glad you could find the positivity you could in the environment, as well.

I appreciate your input very much.

Oh, and Jubilation Lee from Shang, one of their most infamous sexpests, is protected by staff despite having - shock! - harassed multiple people.

    For sanity and safety, who?

    He’s Emma Frost/Talia/Monet/et al.

Literally the first person to page every female character, if it’s one whose genitals he wants to fumble with. Drove at least one person from the game in tears because he refused to quit bothering her.

On Shang, there are multiple rules that were put in place just to deal with him.

On HA, he’s considered by staff to be one of their most valued players.

Excelsior! is another one that I’d recommend, it’s a super hero roster game. But the staff there has been super awesome with getting plot out there, and making sure that everyone is able to not only just participate but to have a chance to shine as well.

I have a character who runs a bar, and I agreed to it (three characters in total donated to get the place up and running) simply because it has a lot of potential to generate RP.

Yeah, it can get out of hand, and what do you do when everyone on grid tries to show up?

But so far, it’s been a positive experience.

I think pre-planning can be fun, and even a Good Idea, especially if you’re looking for something that’s potentially intense or sensitive. Being on the same, explicitly stated page about what the expectations are for a connection isn’t bad!

But it ultimately does come down to being able to trust another player, because unfortunately, people will absolutely agree to X while wanting Y and figure they can just “persuade you later”.
