I’m right there with you. I literally did a whole homeschool lesson with my kids on that whitepaper, showing how to think critically about the potential biases and how the company frames the results.

Anyway, I didn’t dive too deep into the underlying studies themselves, focusing on the meta-analysis part. @Trashcan was right to point out that some of them were pretty dated.

Deep in my little black heart I have this desire to app a comics game as the demon Baytor, a sort of tube with teeth that shouts “I AM BAYTOR!” a lot and does little else.

This is a bad, bad idea, obviously bad. It might be okay if I made sure Baytor could only be found where it’s found in the comics, working as a bartender at a certain pub, completely easy to avoid, and treated it as a sort of NPC I depict while playing a reasonbly PC-written-PC primarily.

@Gashlycrumb Also, chances are most of the people you (general not specific) have a problem with have a similar opinion of you so 1) Why would they care? 2) Why would they be surprised? People are allowed to avoid games because of Staff (whether your own issue or in support of someone else) so it seems hypocritical to not allow Staff the same option especially when they’re the one putting in the effort to run the game.

While I’m sure there are some recent articles that touch on the darker side of MU*, I always look to this one (written by Julian Dibbell) outlining an atrocious event that happened on LambdaMOO:

I’m terrible at summarizing so I won’t really try, but it does a fine job of sharing a terrible event, how it affected people, and the changes that happened after. It also touches on what it means to make a society and shape a culture in this shared hobby; for as terrible as the event is, it’s also heartening to see how things can grow and change through player influence.

I was on the L&L Crossroads, briefly. It was not friendly to someone in an ‘off’ timezone - I only lasted a few months.

My first MU* was a place called Spheres, and I logged in for the first time on the 4th of January 1999. I memorised the date because I knew this would be the start of something big in my life, but I definitely wasn’t prepared for just where the journey has taken me.

Yeah, I can’t say I was psyched ot see it was 5E but it’s not a deal breaker either. It’s weird because we live in a great time for IP-based RPGs(Transformers, GI Joe, Power Rangers, and now Thundercats), but I’m not a huge fan of any of the systems behind them. The exception being Star Trek. I do like the 2D20 system.

I have watched a few people play it, but it seemed like the kind of game that would make me rage quit. lol

It’s the ideal game for therapists to play instead of doing our notes. Lots of clinically inadvisable langage, do recommend.
